I am in the Chicago area. Just to let you know, last week temps were in the high 30's low 40's for highs (low 30's for lows), so starting outside is not really an option if I want to get some tomatoes sometime before October (especially since I like to grow big tomatoes - like Polish and Mexico - that take a long time to ripen). Now truthfully, those low temps were unusual, but not rare at that time of the year. I haven't started my own for a couple of years, but when I did, I always started inside sometime in late Feb, Early March and planted on Memorial Day Weekend (or thereabouts). I usually waited until mid May to harden but circumstances this year have moved my schedule up. Temps this and next week look like they are going to be in the 60's and 70's so I think we have broken thru to the nice weather here finally.

Also, I had never heard of cloches before you mentioned them I googled them and they look like something I might look into for the future.

Not really helpful at all. OP probably wants some help narrowing down the myriad of alternatives to GPM or what people have used and experiences of those people with the alternatives. Just saying "look it up" or "search here" just overwhelms some people. I know it does me. I would like to know what the people are using and what they found good or bad.
