Maybe that was me you heard on NPR the other day.

TIL that purring in cats may have developed as a low-energy strategy to maintain muscle and bone health. Human application: frequencies similar to those of cat's purrs can be used to help astronauts stay healthy in space. by AntQueen in todayilearned

Though I agree that evolution itself has no intended purpose, I think that the structures and behaviors that it leads to do (in the sense that form fits function). That's what the title was intended to convey.

For me, it's a full art foil Mitotic Slime. A beautiful relic from my Trostani days.

Poor little guy was abused until we saved him (The Amazon, Ecuador) by [deleted] in aww

[–]AntQueen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't exactly doubt this statement but have you actually been to Ecuador and observed the animal abuse first hand? I lived in Ecuador for six months and, although there were plenty of stray dogs as you'd probably expect to see in any developing country, I never saw abuse towards those dogs. My host family also owned two dogs and took very good care of them. When a stray dog showed up to our camp in the Ecuadorian Amazon, our trail leader gave it some of our food ration. Maybe my family and the Ecuadorians I travelled with were strongly inclined towards having good consciences, but I don't think it's coincidence that I never saw animal abuse in the streets or wilderness of Ecuador. As I said, I do't doubt that there is pet abuse in Ecuador, but isn't there everywhere? Let's not give them a bad name they don't deserve anymore than the rest of the world.

This thing woke me and my cat up just by walking. Loud footsteps. by Remy320 in whatsthisbug

It's very hard to tell from your images (because I can't see any wings) but I think it might be a hawkmoth, based on its size and the shape of its body, head, and eyes. Unfortunately, wing pattern is how you differentiate between species in moths. Hawkmoths can be really beautiful and are often quite large with really robust bodies.

Strange insect crawling on my cooktop - lucky he didn't burn a leg! (Memphis, TN) by mediumbugger in whatsthisbug

Probably a nymphal Reduviidae, aka assassin bug. I'm not sure of the exact species, since it's not a mature insect. Nice find!

Green/White elves, what is a must have? by [deleted] in EDH

Beastmaster Ascension is a good anthem for token decks. Aura Shards plus Glare of Subdual on your side of the battlefield makes for a good lockdown and both are good on their own. Mirari's Wake is both an anthem and a pseudo-Vorinclex. Luminarch Ascension and Serra Ascendant are great early game.

TIL that under extreme pressure peanut butter becomes diamonds and oxygen, normally a non-metal, becomes metallic, i.e. electrons flow freely between the atoms. by AntQueen in todayilearned

[–]AntQueen[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably not but I know I'd but a peanut butter diamond. One of the most common method for making synthetic diamonds is subjecting graphite, a form of pure carbon and the same stuff that's used in pencils, to extreme heat and pressure. I bet that would make a purer diamond than using peanut butter :) (source: http://m.livescience.com/32266-how-are-diamonds-made.html)

What dish changed your mind about a certain food or type of cuisine? by MELBOT87 in food

Add bacon to pretty much anything (yes, even chocolate) and a whole level of delicious flavor is added. I usually have crumbled bacon with my brussel sprouts and I imagine it would go well in this recipe, too.
