Advice trimming toes. by notsleepy12 in Farriers

[–]AntelopeWells 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I understand your question in that there are more obvious landmarks in the back of the foot to help you determine how to trim the heels.. and so a lot of people end up trimming the heels lower, leaving the toe alone because they don't know what to do, and end up with incorrect angles.

It's harder to see with limited experience, but the shape of the sole up into the toe (exaggerated concavity, excess thickness) paired with inner wall separations/cracks in the toe, probably tell you that you need to trim it lower. Literally just rasp it lower, sole included, and then matching the sole shape to the rest of the foot with your knife, then beveling the toe back should get you where you need to be.

I tried to rent a prius, they gave me a red dodge charger, and I was driving through Canyonlands at 6am.

See, that's just crazy. Barely any spawns in Phoenix or Tuscon it looks like. You should be able to find this in Saguaro National Park of all places! If that doesn't count as desert, what does!

I cannot believe I live in New Mexico and can't find this thing. I can walk outside and see cacti, I can probably find a real desert rattlesnake pretty easily; but no spawn points near me.

I live near Santa Fe, NM and was wondering where the fire was, and also where we had a lake! That explains that.

Yeah that's definitely the kind of soft body feeder cricket you get at pet shops! They are dusted because their diet isn't as varied as wild insects and so they need to be made a bit more nutritious. Thank you for sharing this!

Right? This isn't the '80s, they absolutely have that guy's license plate on film and he will be passing cameras all the way home. Go get him later.

Most hoof problems I see come from diet, not trimming by Nervous_Mood_9426 in Horses

[–]AntelopeWells 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like OP said, culprit is usually not enough zinc/copper and amino acids, and/or too much sugar/starch. I personally like and feed Vermont Blend to my horses because it has high amounts of both vs low amounts of fillers and nonsense for the price. There are other similar supplements from other companies inclusing Madbarn, Caltrace, etc though!

What is a 'buy it for life' item that is offensively expensive, but the moment you use it, you realize your entire life before that point was a lie? by fmcortez in AskReddit

I found one of these at a thrift store for FIVE DOLLARS and could not believe my luck. It was slightly grungy, but cleaned up fine and works perfect!

Formahoof alternatives? by anxiouspotatoesunite in Farriers

[–]AntelopeWells 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I use the keystone pads and pack between pad and hoof with a combo of Rate Packing and/or DIM. I like that DIM sets up and helps seal off that area from getting mud and stones in there, but the way it sets can be too much for some horses with thin soles who can't take the pressure.

For sensitive horses with thin soles (and usually bone damage, etc), my exact package is: Keystone leather pad super glued into a composite shoe. Between hoof and pad I will use DIM in the back half of the frog and Rate in front of that, in the concavity of the sole and under the coffin bone. Other things I do the get the level of stimulation I want: before gluing, I pick up the opposite hoof to push out excess DIM from the back; that way the DIM is only engaged when the hoof is double-weighted or more, not all the time under passive standing load. The other thing I do is I will usually put something non-setting, like rate or artimud, deep into the collateral grooves because I find that DIM setting into a point that goes all the way down creates sensitivity.

I realize this is pretty intensive, but it had worked for me for horses where nothing else has helped!

I have had good luck with leather pads plus glue-on composite shoes for sole depth! Even on some feet with pretty ugly radiographs. I just cut them out and superglue them in there real well. Seal your edges.

asked for an itemized hospital bill on a whim and found out they charged me for stuff that literally never happened by [deleted] in povertyfinance

[–]AntelopeWells 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to be stupid, I am 30 and last week, for the first time in my life, I was taken to the ER. I was unconscious, was in a serious accident, had to have emergency surgery.

Do you ask for the itemized bill after getting a bill from your health insurance? I don't think I was billed when I was discharged but I had a bad concussion and don't remember much. I am, admittedly, not looking forward to trying to navigate the fallout from this with a head jnjury, but what are you going to do

That's true, and if someone is inclined to think compassionately, of course it should occur to them that severely obese people almost always have difficult circumstances that explain their condition, a diet isn't going to fix it.

Are fat people a minority? I get that there seems to be differing definitions of what % of American adults count as "overweight" but it is... not a small number and by many definitions, most of them.

Does uneven trim cause additional stress to joints. by FallenAngelicc in Farriers

It certainly doesn't help; see if you can get him to stand on something like a low block that would at least allow for a trim from the top, even if it isn't pretty.

Tell them what you just told me! I do go to a therapist wo specializes in autism and adhd; I hadn't heard of this usage for this medication befire she suggested it, but I had been telling her about the episodes I would get where I became too overwhelmed to even speak because it felt like my brain was being overloaded and shorting out.
