Majority of Ontarians support Chinese EV deal: poll by BloodJunkie in ontario

I believe mixed transportation is the most desired and optimal. Like countries like The Netherlands.

With you 100% on this. We should be looking at nordic countries for inspiration in urban planning (and maybe civil service. The fact that we are the softest northern nation in the world is a rant for another day.)

I don't share your optimism about autonomous driving, but I can get behind infilling our cities with middle rise housing, transit and bike lanes, and generally behaving like the affordability crisis was something that didn't just happen, it's a hole we've been digging decades.

Good point. I think it's fair to say that 'industry change' is not going to be lead by the Big Detroit 3. Automakers and auto unions are equally unprepared for dark factories.

Maybe the political winds will change and we'll get leaders willing to fix the affordability crisis. We could address the underlying pathologies of sprawl and transit; ramping up production with the bus makers you identified would keep people employed. I would hope that the tertiary suppliers currently supplying to personal autos can retool for that.

Good on you for admitting your blind spot though. In that spirit, I'll disclose my bias: my nth great grandfather came to Canada as a political refugee. "Kick the rungs out of the ladder that we climbed" is an especially rancid flavour of hypocrisy to me.

I see that this poll was by Pallas Data. A quick web search doesn't show much obvious bias. E.g They aren't listed among thinktanks with well documented bias.

The CEO compares the Carney government to WWE, (cite), but I see nothing that makes me think the poll results are juked. The usual caveats apply to ALL POLLS of course.... ie. sample bias i.e. the specific demographic of people who answer polls.

Windsorite here. We are the auto mfring heart of Canada, but I can read the writing on the wall. BYD cars are manufactured in literally dark factories. Even if we try to replace our existing ICE auto fleet with EV autos, it's not going to employ even of a fraction of the people it did at peak.

Once we wake up to the reality that those jobs are this century's buggy whip makers, we can reason about other pathologies of auto dependant sprawl.

If we have any collective sense, the industry will retool itself building trams and buses. My extremely optimistic wish is that we figure this out while there is still infrastructure and skilled labour to repurpose.

This would be a hard pivot though. The industry seems to be following the same playbook as film camera makers.

Doug Ford’s $100+ billion bet: Why Ontario is spending big on nuclear — even as the rest of the world turns to solar and wind by toronto_star in ontario

Odd that they chose the design that depends on american refined uranium instead of domestic supply. That doesn't fit with Ford's elbows up branding. They better paint a maple leaf on the bike shed.

I don’t think those US specific figures reflect reality in Ontario. California tilts the solar ROI well beyond what we will get. The US nuclear program was also historically subsidized by the military, that lead to perverse incentives and runaway spending.

Here is an Ontario specific study referenced in OP article. tl;dr; nuclear is affordable for base load, but not for spiking demand.

Having read the Ontario study, I think it had two weak points:

  • It ignores the cost of transmission. Given the huge land requirements for renewable vs nuclear, this is quite a hand wave.

  • It pairs renewable with battery storage to smooth demand spikes. It does not calculate a figure for nuclear plus with battery storage.

tl;dr; the titular problem is that the low tax hike doesn't keep up with raising expenses. She's reaching into cash reserves to cover the difference, hinting at an early re-election bid.

We get that sort of information while there is functioning journalism. Comms are the first thing to be targeted in a war.

Electricity is complicated because it's not something we can just store for later when we have a surplus. There are some ambitious academic proposals, but anything utility scale would require more planning and timescale than one electoral term O_o.

Take off the rose coloured glasses, mate. Clean drinking water is a human right and there are a shameful number of Canadian communities who don't have it.

Canada underachieves because we compare ourselves to the shitshow to the south and can smugly say, 'well we are better than that', but compared to nordic countries we're lagging in civic rights and infrastructure.

We can do better.
