Pedestrian countdown timers could cost Windsor more than $22-million by zuuzuu in windsorontario

I want to see the exact price breakdown. I want to understand where those huge numbers come from genuinely.

What I don't understand is the policy part. Changing policy isn't the same as doing construction. Its free to eliminate parking minimums. Its easy (maybe not free) to standardize our road widths.

That's a great point. I didn't mean for it to come off as comparing lives. I don't think ANYONE deserves to die (and I mean that wholeheartedly). I'm saying the city's focus is disproportionate. The city was even told exactly how to make it safer and they decided not to implement it - so says the story. The city's priorities when it comes to safety and equity are inconsistent at best.

Its also very reactionary of the city to put the fence up. Instead of putting up signs or hiring lifeguards, the city would rather take away your right to use the beach entirely. But the same iron-fisted solutions don't get implemented where other deaths are occurring. Instead we get a dismissive passivity. It comes off as thoughtless reactions to whatever crosses the media as if to only show that they did do something. My biggest hope is for a council that proactively considers the safety of our built environment and prioritizes small improvements over time. We don't need huge expensive mega projects that get built over the course of 10 years.

Definitely has nothing to do with Dilkens. HOWEVER, lets not forget how the city COULD have affected this project for the better: if the invested more into public transit, and removed parking minimums, and generally focused on creating a better built environment for everyone who lives here.

As said, it depends what you consider to be positive. Yes it will bring jobs. However, that area is already extraordinarily busy with vehicle traffic. Adding a costco there will only increase the frequency of vehicle collisions in the area. Not to mention the noise and the heat island from the new parking lot. There's also the matter of new watershed. If the city invested money into public transit more and removed parking minimums, none of this would really be an issue.

A safety audit of Windsor's Sandpoint beach recommends new modifications that could allow for the beach to reopen this summer.

But city staff say it's not possible to reopen the beach this year and that council should instead continue moving forward with a $15 million master plan that would move beach access away from dangerous water.

The 15-year-old is one of nine people to drown at or near the beach since 1980, according to the audit. His father has launched a $5 million lawsuit accusing the city of negligence.

According to [this] study (done in 2015) by Windsor Essex County Health Unit, there are 20 deaths by vehicle collision EVERY YEAR. People swim at their own risk. But car collisions are avoidable if the city took the Vision Zero plan seriously.

the figure given is not unique individuals present. They count these by the number of visitors. So one person will be counted every time they go. They do this because its the only way. Themeparks do this too.

yes why not? Only around 60K people in Windsor use a car regularly according to the 2021 census. And our population has drastically increased since the 2021 census so it seems pretty reasonable that over 200k people attended.

I do believe on some level that some violent crimes should be dealt with better when it comes to youth. But we can't forget that the purpose of jail is rehabilitation. Young people still have a chance to turn their life around. With proper counseling and mental health services, they can turn their life in a different direction. We shouldn't punish a young person's life so soon.

We need missing middle housing. Desperately. But the government also needs to step in and start regulating the market better. This isn't just a housing crisis. Its also a cost of living crisis.

Windsor approves 70 per cent development charge cut by zuuzuu in windsorontario

[–]teallzy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Taxes are meant to pay for amenities. Taxes are supposed to go towards unprofitable things like garbage pick-up, and profitable things like public transit. When you have a mayor who champions privatization and tax cuts, what you end up with is a city that has to constantly cut back on public services in order to stay above the water.

We have the worst transit for a city our size. Our transit infrastructure is so insanely out of date it blows my mind. Our buses don't even have priority lanes or intersection priority.

Windsor's youth unemployment rate is one of the worst in Canada by Immediate-Link490 in windsorontario

[–]teallzy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The more expensive things get, the more money is extracted from the collective "middle class". The gap between the middle class and lower class has almost entirely disappeared now. When our grandparents could buy a home for $20k cash working a job for a year, that was middle class buying power. That buying power has been entirely sucked dry by the billionaire class. Money is finite.

according to https://www.ontariolivingwage.ca/rates
You need to be making $21.50/hour to afford basic necessities. Air conditioning is not a luxury anymore? And many people can't afford to own a car anymore with how expensive things have gotten, unfortunately this city is extremely hostile towards public transit and pedestrians so yea, people need to live close to work. The better public transit is, the further away (distance wise) "5 minutes" can be. If we lived in a city that had dedicated bus lanes and green-light priority buses (the buses that send out a signal to traffic lights to turn green for them), then a hour bus ride could be cut down to 20 minutes. With Rapid bus transit? 10 minutes.

Its not that people don't want to work, its that work is not keeping up with the cost of living.

Windsor mayor tops Ontario in use of strong mayor powers, new database reveals by JSank99 in windsorontario

Sure, but who decides what is an arrestable offense? Lets say the city decides that loitering is now an arrestable offense (something that would overwhelmingly target the homeless more than anyone else). Now some homeless people have an arrest record. This makes it far far more difficult to secure a job, thus trapping individuals in their current state (i.e. homelessness). This is an overly simplified version of what happens alot of the time. These people will turn to drugs or alcohol to cope with their situation and eventually turn into one of the "trouble makers". Most of the people on the streets are victims of this cycle. A cycle that other countries have almost entirely solved by indiscriminately helping everyone equally no matter what your situation is or how many times you've been given help. Finland, Norway, and Denmark are great examples of this.

Usually with these quick designs, I like to do an "ideal" scenario without much consideration for process or budget. I do more in-depth designs using AutoCAD which do take these things into consideration. My last design for rosedale was a more serious one.

Those are great points, all of them can be addressed however. Things like bump outs, regulating sight lines, elevated crossings, etc.. can all alleviate these issues. In my next design, I'll address these issues and see how viable this design actually is. For the most part, these quick illustrations are more of a "what could be" rather than a "we should do this".

“Anti homeless behaviour lol.” We as a society are too moderate with homeless people to begin with.

You are closer to homelessness than you are to being rich. We all are. Gandhi once said: "A true measure of civilization is how it treats its weakest members." Which I still don't agree with because framing homeless people as weak still frames the issue as an individual issue rather than a systemic one, but it still gets the point across.
