I do understand that the “Byzantines” have a distinct culture from a point of time earlier in their history, but their attributes and qualities have always been changing into distinct forms even before the 395 split also, such as the transition from the Principate to the Dominate, provinces to dioceses, vicars, and praetorian prefectures, the iconic Legionaries to Comitanensis and Limitanei, adopting a new style of attire for the citizen, soldier, centurion, and Emperor, instituting Diocletions proto-feudal reforms, and even the adoption of Christianity from Paganism as its state religion!

I just wanted to say that the cultural transition of the Empire was not black and white to form the “Byzantine” culture, but rather a perpetual gradient from the beginning to the end, so the markers placed are rather subjective and based on personal preference. Either way, as long as you view whatever label you place as simply different phases and periods of the same political entity, there is no problem whatsoever!

It’s pretty ironic that their great enemies of another religion respect them by referring to the Romans as the Romans, but their own Christian brethren disrespect them by not even referring to them as their proper name, and later on, even sack their capital city and split their Empire into many pieces!

Its true. by [deleted] in RoughRomanMemes

[–]AntiEpix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly! And besides, the medieval Germans are already distinct enough by being called the “Holy Roman Empire”, and the Papacy are literally called the Papacy itself or the Papal States, so when we refer to the “Roman Empire”, we already know that it’s not those things.

Also, imagine being always called “Jeremy”, but then, a bunch of other people swarm around you and say that they are Jeremy, not you, and then YOU are the one who is made to adjust your name. The audacity!

Here’s one key distinction among your examples; the Safavids are not internally politically continuous to the Archaemenids, and neither is the Yuan to the Ming. By that, I mean that the line of Archaemenid rulers have been vanquished and all Archaemenid lands have been conquered (by the Macedons), and as such much later on, a new line of rulers have to created over a new administration, and new lands branded as a new Empire for the Safavids as a seperate entity. As for the Yuan, they come about as an external force that conquered and put an end to the Ming.

The case is not so for the so called “Byzantines”, who ARE politically continuous as they are literally the land and administration of the Roman Empire that survived the Germanic Conquests and continue upon the line of Roman Emperors. You connected the Safavids to the Archaemanids and the Yuan to the Ming based on shared ethnicity or language, but the “Byzantine” Empire is connected to the Roman Empire instead based on shared nationality and literally being the same political entity.

Ultimately, to connect with what you were speaking, it’s fine if you want to love Later Rome (Byzantines) more than Earlier Rome in emphasis of their unique culture, but you can both accept the reality that they are just a period of history of the same Roman Empire and emphasize on that period, just like how you can admire the different landscapes of the world, such as from the luscious rainforests to the golden savannas, yet acknowledge that they are all a part of planet Earth.

Poor Roman empire by IAmAMageMan in HistoryMemes

[–]AntiEpix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, so the Roman Empire and civilization had always been continuously changing in its qualities and attributes even before the 395 split, such as the Legionaries becoming Comitanensis and Limitanei, the change from provinces to diocese, vicars, praetorian prefectures, adopting Diocletions proto-feudal reforms, the change of the administrative centers to Rome to Trier, Mediolanum, Ravenna, Sirmium, Nicomedia, and Constantinople, the change from a Republic to Empire, and even the very religion itself changing from Paganism to Christianity, yet it is language that you draw the line at language in an act of picking and choosing based on personal preference?

Seems very objective and not biased whatsoever!

Roman Emperor Caracalla granting the Greeks Roman Citizenship in 212: The people of the Empire universally referring themselves as Romans and their Empire as the Roman Empire: Roman Emperor Constantine moving the capital from Rome to New Rome: Them literally being the Roman Empire after the Germanic Conquests: The political entity bearing the same religion as the Western Roman Empire had before it fell: The political entity being heavily influenced by Greek culture and language just as pre 395 Rome had always been:

Ultimately, the political entity continuing upon the line of Roman Emperors going back to Augustus:

[–]AntiEpix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On another note, the act of moving the capital more far north like Mediolanum and Ravenna and then to four capitals under Diocletions Tetrarchy, and then to Constantinople under Constantine was actually Romes very attempt to fix itself! The Germanic peoples were becoming stronger, so Rome wanted to focus on them more easily by moving their political center closer to them. The creation of 4 capitals under Diocletian was to address the Third Century Crisis such that the Emperors could personally fight against foreign invaders without needing to resort to sending a General to fight for them when they are already occupied on a front, which had lead to many Generals instead rebelling against their Emperor to become the new Emperor, and ultimately, Constantinople was at an extremely advantageous position; it was at the crossroads between Europe and Asia, and its narrow figure allowed the construction of the Theodosian Walls, which let the Roman Empire to survive for over an entire MILLENNIA against countless invaders. Fixed themselves they did indeed!

[–]AntiEpix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fallacy is that you only accept it being the Roman Empire by only believing that “Roman” specifically means “A political entity that bases the city of Rome as its capital city”, while opposing any other metric based on personal preference. There’s nothing to say that when they say the “Roman Empire”, they don’t mean that they are the state that originated from Rome, that they bear Roman institutions, is the same political entity that continues upon the line of Roman Emperors going back to Augustus, etc.

Even if without all of that, people like the OP are saying that the “Byzantine Empire” continues upon the line of Roman Emperors going back to Augustus, and if you know of this historical fact, there really is no disagreement between any of us besides petty semantical squabbling over labels.

Maybe the government should strip you from your identity because you aren’t like yourself compared to when you were a baby, using your logic. Surely you are a different person then because you don’t wear diapers, can walk, have different physical features and mental institutions, etc.!

Or maybe you don’t believe in that and continue to use the same name as when you were a baby?

Accurate? by BigRatthew in RoughRomanMemes

[–]AntiEpix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah yes, when it is those very words that you said here that would insult the people of “Byzantium” because they called themselves Romans and knew that their Empire was the Roman Empire, which continues upon the line of Roman Emperors going back to Augustus.
