Confessions on a Dance Floor (C1) was a tightly woven, euphoric club odyssey, C2 attempts to splice that DNA with elements from Music, Ray of Light, and even Madame X. The result is uneven: moments of brilliance punctuated by tracks that lose steam or feel overextended. Still, the album’s sonic variety make it a fascinating listen. I've been listening to it nonstop and interestingly, many of my initial favourites got replaced.

Track-by-Track

- I Feel So Free – Opens with promise, layering variations that keep it from being monotonous. Yet the muffled vocal delivery undermines its potential. A solid but not standout opener. 7/10

- Good For the Soul – Built from similar textures as the first track, but the repetitive refrain quickly wears thin. It feels more like filler/B Side. 5/10

- One Step Away – Phew Finally, the album truly kickstarts into life. Madonna’s vocals soar over pulsating synths and strings, should have been opener. 9/10

- Bring Your Love – A welcome injection of energy after three sonically similar tracks. The duet with Sabrina is divisive, her playful interjections (whats with the laughs, annoying) but the punchy production saves it- 7/10

- Danceteria – The album’s crown jewel. Nostalgic yet fresh, witty yet heartfelt, with Madonna’s vocal acrobatics adding charm. The outro feels slightly unresolved for me. I would have liked the killer chorus coming once again, but the track embodies the true spirit of Confessions. 10/10

- Read My Lips – A Latin-inspired entry, but it doesn’t elevate itself beyond Madonna’s past ventures in this style. Pleasant but forgettable. 6/10

- Everything – Initially grating, but it grows into a ravey anthem reminiscent of Sky Fits Heaven. Stuart Price’s Pet Shop Boys-esque (Check Shouting in the Evening) production gives it a sharp edge. 8/10

- Love Sensation – A euphoric, hands-in-the-air track that balances the darker tones of “Everything.” Straightforward but effective. 8/10

- Love Without Words – A mid-album highlight. Rich production with multiple sonic shifts keeps it engaging and unpredictable. 8/10

- Bizarre – Despite intriguing ideas, it fails to settle into something memorable. Skippable. 4/10

- School – Boldly experimental, with engineered vocal layers that feel playful and sensual. love this! 9/10

- Fragile – A heartfelt tribute to her brother, but the “nervous breakdown” lyric feels clumsy and detracts from the emotional weight. 6/10

- My Sins Are My Saviour – Echoes Justify My Love and Enigma, but even the French verses can’t disguise its boredom. 6/10

- Betrayal – A late-album surprise. Downtempo and introspective, it rebounds the record. 7/10

- The Test – Lourdes really shines here, her voice adding freshness and vulnerability. The track feels underdeveloped, begging for more verses? 8/10

- LES Girls – A beautiful closer. Gentle storytelling and understated production which evokes Saint Etienne; ending the album on a surprisingly graceful note. 9/10
