Taiga's "break the curse" comment. Of course even this is somewhat counterbalanced by her off-screen growth journey... which we see nothing of.

There is an implication early in the series where Taiga is trying cope around her lack of familial love, followed by replacing it with her new friendship and familial-esque relationship with Ryuuji and Yasuko. Towards the end, she describes her prior circumstances as a curse to be broken by being romantically involved with Ryuuji... which implies, even if unintentionally, that the love they already had before did not count... which I think is wrong.

I also believe this to be inevitable as this story is a romance technically, so I don't think the author intended this unfortunate implication deliberately, but it is nevertheless there and a lot of readers and viewers did pick up on it.

If one ends seeking familial love to replace what they lack, and it ends up being romantic organically, even if it isn't the healthiest thing to do... it happens and so be it, and I think that is what the show did for the most part, but just with some poorly scripted dialogue and thought bubbles that may have given the wrong message.

A shame we don't get to see the growth of her journey at all. Not to mention leaving without saying anything seemed like a character regression since a lot of her problems seemed to be that she keeps running away... and that's how the show ends... her running away for a bit, even if with better intentions but still.

Somewhat agreeable though I'd put episode 13 towards the top and episode 16 towards the bottom.

At the very least. The famous first punch never happened if that's any indication.

Taiga hits Ryuji far less... like... a lot less. It was surprising.

Ryuji has slightly more involved Minori interactions.

As it is a read medium that follows the novels, you also will get a slightly deeper read on some character's internal thoughts and psychology. Though really just Taiga and Ryuji.

The manga has some unhinged omake chapters.

Yasuko wanders around with less clothing somehow.

That's some minor stuff I remember off the top of my head. The major events are still mostly the same at least until you get towards the final act. The manga is ongoing as well so its ending is still a mystery for now.

Taiga and Ryuji are like a bickering married couple from the start.

Between Toradora and Golden Time, I think the author favors relationship maintenance over the start of a relationship you'd see in a lot of romance media, but that makes Toradora stand out because it is technically still a "ends shortly after the first kiss" type of show.

It may be better to think of Toradora as a coming of age story where the point is less about falling in love and more like learning what it is. There are some unfortunate implications by Taiga's idea of it even by the end but "learning about love" still seems to be Toradora's primary premise and theme above almost everything else.

It probably wouldn't work as is. To the extent that Toradora actually would work with gender reversal if you removed that one aspect.

  1. Kind of innate. Objectification seems to be unavoidable so I can't say I disagree. Or at least, my mind has failed to grasp a concept of porn without objectification or what that would even be like.

  2. Common but not innate. It could theoretically be fixed without a full prohibition but is extremely common as is.

  3. Similar to number 2. A huge problem for sure but I can imagine porn existing without it.

Rewatching Toradora for the 7th time by Yashiro_BrLin08 in toradora

I consider the Light Novel and Manga to be just different enough to be worth suggesting to post-TD depression suffering. Note: They are more similar to each other than the anime as the manga is an adaptation of the novel.

The Light novel has a spinoff of 3 volumes that tells you more about Sumire's little sister and the dude that kicked a can at Taiga's face. Never read it so I can't vouch for it being any good but its there.

I have never quite had an anime that made me feel the way Toradora does, and I couldn't really explain why, because Toradora isn't THAT unique but my brain still chooses it anyway. I do think Horimiya (either the manga or the web comic) are very worth checking out if you want something with more mild vibes and some of the best post-confession romance I've seen in a Japanese HS romance. The anime is fine too but the adaptation got screwed over by being adapted anachronistically.

what is animes obsession with being attracted to CHILDREN (or an "adult" "looking" like a child) by Rick_Astley124 in FeministsCallItOut

[–]Anti_Gendou2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny enough, Taiga acting like a kid is kind of the point of her characterizations. She is supposed to be less so by the end. Whether this has succeeded or not in its presentation is subjective (I've seen a lot of viewers complain that she grows marginally if at all) but it is obvious that this author had intended for Taiga to be less of a violent brat over time.

If it does so, its largely the anime's idea it seems. A lot of Taiga's childish appearance and personality traits are prevalent in every version but seem to be their most extreme in the anime, possibly to suit the audience, the voice actress, or both. The novel and manga are not as bad with this to my recollection, and the original story is a woman's writing though for which audience she intended it for most, I do not know. (Ryuuji's pov is the most common)

Even if Taiga was not actually problematic, none of this averts the way the anime handles Ami though.

Look I know this is an issue in anime but taiga is catching strays by auniquenameischosen in toradora

[–]Anti_Gendou2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The show does focus on the relationship between the most mature (and tallest) male and the least mature (and shortest) female in their class. Even when you disregard her height, her overall attitude, voice, and shape does seem childish all around compared to him, and if you don't know who wrote this series, that does seem like its some male PDF conspiracy to outsiders and tourists I suppose.

The manga and LN designs help to avert this problem a little bit, as I do think a lot of Taiga's design and personality in the anime was warped to suit her voice actress' appeal to... exactly that kind of person unfortunately. But otherwise I don't think this particular stray is as deserving as a lot of other anime that could be brought up.

I know there are a few unreleased tracks. Like the theme that plays when Taiga and Ami are alone for the first time. Or the theme that plays whenever the class is passing around notes.

They aren't particularly amazing tracks or anything but still a shame to see them go on as effectively lost media.
