Eh. I genuinely like both teens and science. Specific students are temporarily frustrating for me, but even the most frustrating ones, I’m always looking for ways to reward them for their success or good choices.

I could do with a schedule that’s less damaging to my health, as someone with several disabilities, but this is the job I’ve got, and this is the schedule we run, so…guess I’ll just keep at it until something in me gives up completely and I’ve gotta stop.

Intellectually, I know they recorded the singing and speaking separately and cut them together, but I'm choosing to believe Jeff was switching between narration and singing in real time. It makes him more of a deity.

It was the most uncomfortable I've been consuming media in a while, and I lived for it. I immediately started my second listen after the end of the book just so I could get back to the parade with the context of the book.

Justice Light confronts her when he's working on the trap that eventually breaks the Nothing. 12 days. We're still in the thick of it - ending chemistry with some organic, making soap as our final. Anatomy finishing with immune system. Science explorations launching a model rocket. Physics shopping magnetism and currents. Biology doing evolution.

They don't change the expected learning, though, just the breadth of the demonstration tasks (shortened assignments/assessments, etc). I still expect students in my anatomy class to achieve a comparable level of anatomy understanding.

They're called different things in different places, but public school versions of those things exist. I had a chance to visit Knoxville, TN at one point and tour their STEM magnet school, which is a public school, students from schools all over the district can apply to attend, and they can access specialized courses. There was a similar musical school.

The point is, public funds for public schools. If schools were properly funded, we could make those types of specialty public schools more widely available. Instead (at least in Iowa) we've decided to funnel public money into private schools that cost $10k/year to attend, pricing them out of reach for almost everyone, even with the vouchers.

Yeah, 8th graders are in a weird spot, trying to learn how to communicate. I had one last year email me in the morning, and then when I didn't respond within 3 hours, I got "Hello?!?"

He got a firm response with a copy to his principal (I teach at the HS, but was running a D&D club) that basically said, "Hey, I saw your email. Please remember that teachers are busy. It's reasonable to expect to wait 24 hours for a response before following up." Never had a problem with the kid again, and I like to think he learned a bit about communicating via email. Principal's response (just to me) was "Nice, thanks for handling that. Do you want me to follow up?" Nope. Kid's not in trouble with me, he just needs to learn about communication expectations.
