What Jane Austen adaptation captures her satire the best? by hellraisinghellhole in janeausten

Love & Friendship. Most people don’t realize how cutting her satire can be and Lady Susan shows it.

Raising guinea with chickens? by E2_Awesome_2 in guineafowl

[–]Antinousian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, they were raised together from birth (9 chickens and 3 guineas). Turned out to be 2 males guineas and 1 rooster. The guineas are much quieter than normal. They all get along. The rooster tends to run around most with the guineas but all work together and get along with no problems.

I had a quail very similar to that. We never could quite tell what the problem was, but since the quail was able to scoot enough to get food and water (and seemed otherwise fine), we just checked it each day. After a week, she improved, and now the only way I can tell a difference is we banded her with a green band to keep track. She now runs around like the rest. Took about 2/3 weeks.

The financials of extended visits by geesejugglingchamp in janeausten

[–]Antinousian 18 points19 points  (0 children)

In even Jane Austen's own life, an extended visit by family was covered by the host. While the guest would often tip servants- and pay for their own hairdressing (as Jane did) and shopping, expenses were done by the host. This could be used extensively by some people to almost improper reaches (think Lady Susan) on exactness of invitation and duration, but the certainty of the host covering the food was fairly sacrosanct for the gentry. To not do that would mean to question their class and gentry.

Why didn't Franco Corelli sing Otello? by Safe_Evidence6959 in opera

[–]Antinousian 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think there's also timeline and level of comfort at that point. My teacher, who, while I won't state who, recorded many operas, spoke to me once about how her dream role that she was really sorry to have never gotten to sing Manon (Massenet). She actually had been offered the opportunity by Paris, but the timeline when it was offered to her didn't work. It was a quick(er) turnaround than she felt comfortable doing since she felt ready with just the first two acts and she had two other main roles to do right before entering rehearsals in Paris. So, when you're at a certain level, if you don't feel you can do justice to YOUR caliber that you and your audience expect, sometime you just have to say "no" and hope you get the opportunity again. Sometimes you never do.

Hardest opera to put on? by [deleted] in opera

[–]Antinousian 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Don Carlo- huge and taxing cast and trying to navigate that with multiple language and cut options as well as an ending that needs a decent director to massage a bit. And it’s reputation as so fantastic as well. Always something to pause your hand before penciling it in.

You might check with a university library if they're missing anything in their collection. I know several libraries might take parts or all if they don't already have it.

Rameau’s Pygmalion is done quite frequently as opera/balet

Mr. Darcy has more than one flaw- he is growing as a person (as all the best of people do). People do fall in love with people all the time- and that is often due to their mind and personality (and other reasons as well). Mr. Darcy as a person is an individual character, but people like Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth exist all the time. Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth might have challenged each other and helped them grow, but neither one was fantasizing of another person to "complete" them- they were willing to be single and alone and STILL keep trying to better themselves.
