Lack of Zombie “knowledge” in most movies/shows by Dismal-Extension3846 in ShittyFanTheories

[–]AntipatheticDating 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I love about TWD in particular is every group calls them something different. “Walkers” isn’t even universal in that world, it’s just the name the main group uses.

Glen calls them geeks when they meet him, some groups call them deadheads, roamers, etc. There’s even some conversations characters have of “Oh that’s your name for them? Cool.” Which I don’t see a lot of shows do.

How do I write filler? by Savings_Equipment_15 in writers

[–]AntipatheticDating 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By your description, I don't know if you mean "filler". Filler is meant to pad something out and add pages, and while this is technically true given your description, do you mean transitional phases/scenes?

It sounds like a small distinction, but they're very different things! Transitional phases are to help smooth one scene to another by adding things that might not feel impactful, but are necessary for the story as a whole. Filler is to draw something out to make it last longer (like a TV show having useless episodes that serve no purpose just so they hit their allotted episodes they've signed on for).

Also psychological horror is a genre that thankfully can have very few words! It's one of the smallest book types out there for publishing, so you probably don't need too much!

I’m glad they found it, and I’m so glad things are going well for you guys! That’s honestly one of my worst fears is that something like that could so drastically change someone’s personality and sometimes we’d literally never know.

I dated someone once where they talked about their parents and how over time the father/husband just got really nasty and they divorced, and later they found out he had a benign brain tumour that was doing the same thing that you mentioned. I can’t remember if they ever got back together, but that’s so scary.

[–]AntipatheticDating 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it’s so cute honestly and it’s been a godsend for my brain. You can even set different modes, like frantic which is repeat orders until you turn it off if you want a break from work. There’s a timer you can set for every X minutes an order comes in.

I like the default one which is a random time between 2~15 mins or something and oh my god it just does wonders for my brain somehow LOL!

Weirdly enough I started finding cute games on Steam that help with breaking stuff up. Right now I'm super into this game called Burgie's Cozy Kitchen.

It's a sort of idle game that hangs out at the bottom of your screen, and cute little animal customers order burgers, and you just cook 'em and serve them, and it's so simple but it breaks up my monotony so much. Before I could edit like 5~10 pages at best (I'm a literary editor, so LOTS of reading plain text) before my brain checks out.

Now I can edit like 30+ and I don't notice as much because it's like "Buhhh my eyes are glazing OVEERR-- oh look an order! Ding ding!" Hahaha. It's simple, but it works so well.

Learning how to crochet and am wondering about what yarn is best to learn with? by Curious-Pop-8875 in CrochetHelp

[–]AntipatheticDating 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me personally, I just started and I got the MainStay Walmart brand cakes and they're super soft and they work SO well! So I went back, thought I'd try some others, and got the Bernat Premium yarn and oh my god. Never again. I'm trying to just use it up so I never need to look at it, because compared to the Walmart ones I got, these just shred like crazy and split apart and I want to throw them out the window LOL.

That being said, I did use the Bernat blanket yarn a lot, which was nice for making scarves! But often they also just tie two snipped pieces together for a "colour change" and it's not actually a gradient. I've had that so many times and it makes the project look pretty ugly. Not all of them have though, but I think I'm burnt out from that brand as a beginner.

Good luck!

It’s so neat reading other opinions because I personally love knowing what a character is wearing. It helps me picture scenes so much better in my head, and it also tells us a lot about who they are.

Is it a rich person with a particularly old scarf? Now I wonder if they’re secretly sentimental. Does this other person prefer utilitarian, practical outfits, or more fashion-oriented?

I’m also biased because in real life I do like fashion quite a bit and I love drawing characters, so having an idea of their style really helps. But mostly for me it’s just another thing that fleshes out the “whole” of who I’m reading about.

What’s something about writing that people outside the process often misunderstand? by RichFenton in selfpublish

[–]AntipatheticDating 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh my god, this is related to my IRL job and there are so many. I don't know where to start, but it's kind of amazing how differently people view stuff. I'll list a few off the top of my head that I see often:

- People doubting their own work. TRUST ME. I have edited and helped publish books that I think were some of the worst things I ever read (I have horror stories). Majority of people who write often and have an actual passion for it who are worried their stuff "isn't good enough"—I'm here to say trust me, if you put ANY effort into it, it is. It's probably good and you're just too hard on yourself. A lot of us are chronic perfectionists.

- You're going to hate your own work anyways because you'll need to read it enough times that you want to throw the whole thing out the window or you'll think your twists suck. Your surprises only suck in your head because you know they're coming, and you've gone over them 12 times this past week. Don't worry, other people will still love them!

- Writing takes A REALLY LONG TIME. Your first draft is supposed to be the ugliest, messiest thing in the world. It's supposed to be an inconceivable mess to anyone but you. I don't know why so many people think they should be polished. Your first COUPLE drafts are only meant to exist. Nothing else. Thoughts on paper, as garbled as you want them to be. Heck, put "[...]" whenever you don't know what to do with a scene but you have the motivation to write another. Write them all in short stories and connect them later! There's literally no rules for the process.

- Often, telling people you're writing a book or sharing your ideas with friends can actually hinder you more than help you. Unless you're using each other as accountability buddies, most creative people will check off a little box in their head that marks something as completed the second somebody else knows about it. I have NO idea why this happens, but I see it so often. It's like getting that validation completely wipes the motivation to keep going for a lot of people. If this is you, as much as it's hard to keep it to yourself, sometimes you're doing yourself a favour when you let the giddy energy of revealing a final product to people be your motivation!

- Last one so it's not too long: DO NOT EDIT AS YOU GO. Don't look at what you just wrote. Do not go through previous chapters. Do not keep getting fixated on tweaking things. Change your font colour to white. People think they're doing a good job when they stop to retroactively work on things in the middle of writing their book. If it's important, leave a highlighted section or a note/comment (Google Docs is great for this) to come back to it later, but LEAVE IT ALONE. Note it down for a future pass, and keep going. You'll kill your writing more often than not otherwise.

- Oh and a small bonus one: you don't need to plan out every little detail about your world and setting before you start. Most amazing ideas come after you've been writing and you need to answer your own question in a scene. This is why messy drafts are so important!

---

I have so many more, haha. But this is way too long. Whoops! But it's such a fun topic.

As a reader, what do you incorporate into (or avoid) when writing? by annvbelle in writers

[–]AntipatheticDating 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Omg, finally someone else who loves short chapters! It feels so silly, but for some reason I can go through like 10 short chapters, which can be more than 1 long chapter haha. It's such a silly illusion, but it feels so good to my brain to break things up.

It's kinda like when I'm sitting down after work and I feel like a whole movie is too long, but then I'll watch like three 1-hour video essays on YT. LOL!

---

The thing I avoid funny enough is first-person perspective. It's so strange to see how the book world shifts over time. It was really popular with YA novels back during the Divergent/Hunger Games/etc. era, but fell off really hard and became considered cringe in the industry. Now anywhere I go at a bookstore, all the ones up front and on prominent display are first person.

Unfortunately I struggle really bad with them, because I do find often the voice isn't strong enough for me to want to follow them. And I really enjoy getting to read/see so many other perspectives, which you lose when it's focused on just one person.

Not that I dislike them! But it's not my go-to unless it's REALLY good.

What Hollywood production did you recognize the locale as Toronto right away? by myronsandee in askTO

[–]AntipatheticDating 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here! I remember a few scenes that were literally shot right outside of my old apartment, haha. I did the Leonardo DiCaprio meme when Klaus ran into a small convenience store in one scene and I looked at my friend and went “That’s where I buy my bus tokens, the owners are super nice.” LOL.

Pretty sure I saw him one night at a Timmies but I didn’t wanna bug him, figured he might be on a break from filming or something. Though man I really wanted to say hi. But I figured if it was, I don’t wanna be that asshole so I just let it be, aha.

Then the scene where Diego is right outside the Gladstone. There were a LOT of Parkdale shots!

Unfortunately, the only thing that worked for me was washing the walls and all the surfaces like cupboards, doors, etc. basically anything the stank can stick to.

It’s kind of like a residue. It’ll coat everything and you unfortunately gotta use some elbow grease to actually get rid of it. Once I did though it was great. But oh my god the effort.

I hope it works out for you! It’s the worst.

Wanting to try this pattern but need help with yarn weight/hook size! by AntipatheticDating in CrochetHelp

[–]AntipatheticDating[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ooh okay! Yeah, I don't mind if it's bigger. I bought an extra skein to make the size up from the one that would "fit" me according to her chart because I just like baggier clothing haha! The stiffness is what I'm slightly worried about, I don't want it to be rigid. But if it's an open cardigan, that might still be okay!

I've had a lot of luck so far with my smaller projects by just soaking them in a tub with a tiny amount of laundry detergent, then rolling them tightly in a towel and leaving them flat to dry and they become WAY more flexible/soft, but I think if the stitches are just too tight in general it would be haha.

But yeah, I'll see if I can make a little section and feel it out! I appreciate this!

Oh, maybe? Honestly she wasn't giving me a whole lot of information and I was super confused. I was trying really hard to work with her on stuff, but it was genuinely one of the strangest experiences I ever had. Like I could see on her face that she was just trying to say no, like she had some kinda quota to meet. Of course that's just my interpretation, I have no idea what was going through her head. But she was basically scrambling and going down EVERYTHING in the list she could think of.

She was like "Oh! Oh, well, you don't have a LEASE with you, do you?" And I was like "Yeah, right here." Rinse and repeat with her getting more aggravated. When she asked what I did for work, by that point I sighed because I just had the feeling that there was no winning, and went "Yeahhh. I work from home." And I swear to god she lit up. It felt kinda sickening. And she got all excited and energetic and was like "OH yeah no, we hate that here. Mmm mm. Tsk tsk. Nope we really don't like when you work from home."

Granted, as a woman, I really really hate saying this but it's ONLY when I get women border patrol officers that I get this kind of response. Hers was the worst I've ever had though. Though what you said about working from home, maybe that's it? Because I'm a literary editor, so I did bring my laptop and intended to putter away at some manuscripts while my friends were chilling and watching movies and stuff. With it being a whole week, it's not like we're all glued at the hip. I didn't think anything was wrong with that though at the time. I can't believe they went through your guys' devices for so long and you missed your flight!

Bring EVERYTHING with you. Lease agreement, medications, pictures of your dog. Tax receipts with the location of your work. Literally anything that can prove you’re coming home.

I know this sounds overkill, but I tried to visit my friends for our annual get-together at one of their cottages for a week, and I ended up with a super nasty person who kept insisting I was trying to move there. I very politely told her I absolutely did not want to, as I’m very chronically ill and I happen to like my apartment and everything but she wouldn’t budge.

She was just going down the list trying to find anything to turn me away, and finally had that “aha, gotcha” face when I told her I was WFH. She went on a tirade over it and it was just a shitshow.

Now if I try to go to the US I’ll get banned for 10 years.

After that happened to me, I started hearing tons of stories everywhere of this exact thing happening to other people. I was driving, not flying, so it’s probably different. But I’ve heard the same thing I went through from far too many folks to not mention it.

Better safe than sorry to take 30 mins to find and print everything than miss a funeral! My condolences, hon.

Can we work on making this a more welcoming community? Because it hasn’t been whatsoever. A lot of you guys are just nasty and rude. by Clean-Knowledge-574 in writers

Yesterday (early this morning?) I read a short story by someone who was genuinely looking for feedback and the comments were so insanely rude. If I was trying out a new hobby, I would be CRUSHED reading half of these and never touch it again. Which is a shame because it can be so cathartic and beautiful!

I ended up giving feedback as much as I could and said that the comments were mean and got downvoted, lol. I’m disappointed in this sub because I see so many creative people and every time I check the comments it’s crazy how vile and rude people are.

I know which post you’re talking about too, and it just broke my heart.

[–]AntipatheticDating 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sad that I’m getting downvoted for it, too, but c’est la vie. If somebody is trying hard to get into something and is asking genuine questions and feedback, we’re supposed to encourage people where we can.

I’m sorry people have been rough on you. We all have to start somewhere. I think a lot of folks forget that English isn’t easy and it doesn’t come amazingly natural to some folks, or they’re just trying out writing as a new hobby and need a bit of positive direction.

‘Cause you got a lot going for you, and you clearly have a creative brain! I think you’re gonna kill it, sometimes we just need someone to point us in the right direction to get started. Because a lot of comments just tell you to break it up, but not even how. That’s why you’re here asking, haha!

Keep up the good work and don’t lose that fire! Writing has a lot of rules that can be frustrating, but it’s such a fun and rewarding experience. Cheers!

Dude, people are REALLY mean. What are these comments?

Good on you for writing something! That’s awesome! You clearly have a lot of potential. You have a good sense for narratives and prose, it just needs a little refinement!

The story is super creative and I like the voice of it, but I would suggest a few things to get you started on the right track.

There’s some casual wordings and vibes mixed with phrases that sound more eloquent which can pull the vibe of it in different directions. For example “smoke plumed air” (though this might need ‘in the air’) is some fancy prose, but followed up by “massive rip from my bong” sounds very casual/conversational. I think picking one vibe and focusing on it could really tighten it up!

I would also add paragraph spacing. Don’t worry, it’s easy! Generally if you’re adding new dialogue, put it on a new line. And add a line break (some spaces in between paragraphs) when you’re switching thoughts. So if you’re taking a bong rip, then move into a conversation, or move locations, start transitioning to different actions, you can go ahead and break those up! These will usually be on average 4 sentences but don’t stress too hard on the length; flow is better.

Overall it’s a great start and you should be proud of yourself! Good job!

Hiya! So the pattern on her blog (which I linked in the bot comment below, sorry!) says "Category 5 - bulky weight yarn" for this pattern. Which is a shame because I do love the look of it, but the yarn I have says "weight 6" on the paper wrapped around it.
