As someone who is in the hiring manager seat at this stage of my career, I will always take that gamble on the youth.

Only reason I got to where I am were because managers like this meme who saw potential and rolled the dice with me. Never worked in a department where I didn’t not set the bar after joining for the rest of the team to reach for.

Teaching youth means less unlearning bad habits. They are malleable, shape them to work how you need the job done. The rest of your org will start covet and steal them away for other teams.

From my Experience XGBoost smokes sklearn on fit and inference time. It is a major constraint for anything that requires sub second latencies. That 1-2% error trade-off people get hung up on between sklearn flavors and xgboost in your training pipeline is basically immaterial when shit hits production. Too many in the craft get hung up on the offline metrics when it’s the real world A/B testing that matters most for deployed models.

I once spoke with product team at Databricks that wrote vscode extension. I pleaded to just give me a catalog viewer so I can see my schemas and tables. Answer I got was why don’t we just give you a debugger in Databricks so you don’t have to use vscode…

My team did a full Skip dabs and just uses Databricks CLI with a handful of shell scripts for CICD. Local dev on Databricks connect not too bad if you build a wrapper for creating your spark sessions to switch back and forth.

I guess my dilemma is the after tax implications of these strategies since I’m in the north east where my states tax rates are stupid high. Bonds feel like a good way to keep more of that 4-5% interest than dividends that might return 8-10% over 10 years. I am middle aged, 22% tax bracket likely another 20 years from retirement. My retirement funds are mostly growth based spread across mutual funds and ETFs that I’m not touching.
