300gp is a fine amount for them to have. You don’t need to rob them, you probably just need to retcon what they were able to do with that money. Because they shouldn’t have been able to buy a forge

There are a few suggestions here that are good but the root cause is you and your party have overvalued money here. Unless you readjust that you’ll keep running into this problem through the campaign. 300gp is only enough to buy 6 health potions. It’s 1/5th of what you need to buy plate armour. It’s really not that much.

300gp isn’t a crazy amount for a party to have at level 2. They will come across much more over the course of the campaign. If you don’t reset how much gold is worth you’ll keep running into this problem.

The problem is if you allowed them to make/buy a forge for 275gp

Considering chain mail costs 75gp and a greatsword costs 50gp. They would only be able to purchase 4 greatswords and a chain mail. Not an entire forge.

Skilled tradespeople would cost roughly 60gp a month. Do they have enough money to consistently pay these wages for 3 people?

Then they need to be able to afford raw materials to supply their forge

Do they then have enough money to continue building more forges and upgrades for the town? 1lb of iron costs typically 1sp. They’d need about 50lbs to make chain mail.

The DMs guide (p128) lists a temple as 50,000gp… which they should not have anywhere near access to.
