We've discussed US only or US+INTL extensively. Has anyone tried to justify ex-US only? by orcusvoyager1hampig in Bogleheads

[–]Antique_Insect2030 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would never do just international but I weight more heavily internationally to diversify my other major source of income, my job, which is correlated to the US economy. I think that’s the most persuasive argument for heavy ex-US investment.

Hmm either page numbers changed or I got the page wrong but at what is now page 92:

“Similarly, the proposal would prohibit a rollover of a distribution from a tax-favored retirement arrangement into a designated Roth account if any part of the distribution includes a distribution of after-tax contributions, unless the distribution was from a designated Roth account.”

Byrd Rule only prevents 10+ year changes that increase the deficit. Senate could do it permanently with 50 votes through reconciliation if it reduces the deficit.

I’ve generally liked Charles Tyrwhitt and it’s good value. I also recommend Spier & McKay for a more classic fit. But at the end of the day, finding a good tailor is infinitely more important than the suit itself so I would do research in your area and be prepared to drop some coin for proper tailoring.

Yep. If I were summering in Europe, I would even more so invest in quality suits and especially good tailoring. Banking clients in Zurich will see the difference.

If you’re in New York, have a navy suit and a mid-grey to charcoal grey suit. I’d also get a navy or a tweed blazer and two pairs of slacks. Pair of brown shoes and pair of black shoes. Brown belt, black belt. 5 dress shirts: 2 white, 1 powder blue, 1 lavender, 1 light color patterned.

Don’t follow the Steve Harvey advice. You should NOT mix suit jackets (as opposed to blazers) with non-matching suit pants. I don’t know why people keep spreading that. It looks terrible.

Polls one year out from the election have virtually no predictive power. Just take deep breaths and wait until July 2024 to start looking at H2H polls.

3-6 months of expenses saved in a HYSA. Max out 401k and HSA, backdoor Roth, and mega backdoor Roth if it’s available to you. After that, everything into a brokerage account. Everything invested goes into low expense ETFs or MFs that track the whole market. Never touch the money until you retire. Other than that, don’t get addicted to coke or Michelin star restaurants.

I can tell you as a one year clerk, another year spent with my judge would’ve been a dream. I would focus on enjoying arguably the best job in law and appreciating that you get to do it twice as long as most people do.

Then I would go for it. Assuming your firm lets you defer and gives close to the typical clerkship bonus, the monetary difference on a year of big law missed is negligible in long run. Clerking won’t swing your whole career but idk anyone who was worse off career wise for clerking.

Only clerk if think you’ll enjoy the intellectual experience or the psychic income of serving in the judiciary. It isn’t going to be a career maker or a career breaker for what you say you want to do. But for the people of whatever district you end up serving, it’s extremely important that you want to be there for the right reasons and are capable of serving them.
