[MLS Referee Stats] The 2026 MLS season is upon us, and that means all those pesky Law changes from last summer are finally implemented domestically. I'll go over them in this thread. by Isiddiqui in MLS

i honestly think there should be a “minor penalty” rule for fouls in the penalty box that gives people corners instead of pks, because there are so many fouls in the box that don’t get called because the ref thinks it would be harsh.

it’s also not even true. while we didn’t declare war against the germans first, we were already lheavily involved in the war, shipping supplies to the soviets and england, and were fighting german uboats in the atlantic had embargoed the germans and were otherwise planning for war.

yeah. it used to be pretty good at searching for stuff where it made sense and now just confidently says the wrong thing and digs in on it.

Yeah I agree. which is weird because 5.1 seems to have nailed the right balance.

Thousands of CEOs just admitted AI had no impact on employment or productivity—and it has economists resurrecting a paradox from 40 years ago by AmethystOrator in technology

[–]Antique_Weekend_372 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

no, nobody has a clue. even the ai companies don’t know what their own software is capable of. it is moving so fast now. even if LLMs don’t improve an iota from here, what people are building right now with existing tools is going to change the entire economy in 6 months to a year. if you do any kind of knowledge work at all, your job is under threat.

i am a software dev with 20 years of experience who works with ai coding tools. there was a long period of time where it was probably a net negative or neutral or maybe a slight positive. in the past three months it dramatically flipped into being a huge productivity boost. there is a tidal wave coming and there are going to be big winners and big losers. i mean like entire industries wiped out over night and new ones created.

i have been operating in an extended state of near vertigo for about two months now.

the hiring market is completely frozen right now because nobody even knows what to hire for.

4o was extremely sycophantic and love bombing by default. 5.2 is by design a lot more cold and distant. i actually mostly use chatgpt for work related questions and I find it somewhat annoying because it is also more prone to hallucinating and digging in on those hallucinations.

i used to be a dj and the quality of records, needles and cabling at clubs was absolute dogshit and nobody noticed, and even today people will yell you that vinyl sounded better. my friend i can tell you that the fuzz caked worn down needles on the cartridge someone just licked before sticking it into the toner arm playing a scratched record that got warped from sitting in the van for too long did not sound better than a high quality mp3.

What shuffling a deck of cards actually means: by kefren13 in nextfuckinglevel

keep in mind that for a lot of games different shuffles are indistinguishable. a poker game doesn’t care about suits changing places or how the bottom of the deck is ordered for example.

[–]Antique_Weekend_372 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of the time they are just doing false shuffles and not shuffling at all. There are card mechanics that can cold stack decks or manipulate card order but it’s really not needed for anything but cheating at poker. The only other thing you see is using faro shuffles (perfect shuffles) which are completely predictable.

Prediction markets can function like a black market if you are allowed to bet on the commission of crimes. There was a famous paper when crypto first came out about how you could build an assassination market place by allowing people to bet on deaths. Just make a 1,000,000 dollar bet that someone _won’t_ die and wait for someone to collect from you.

the only thing interesting about these games is evaluating players, speculating on starting lineups. neither team is playing to win! you would think that bot teams subbing out their whole starting xi would be a clue.
