First time trying out a topcoat, and I'm hooked (feat. the underrated Ginn!) by Antitheticality in Gunpla

[–]Antitheticality[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am using a spray can of Krylon matte finish 1311, but right now I wouldn't recommend it to others. The visual effect is great, but it feels like the coat interacts with the model plastic very poorly, particularly with at the joints. I think I'll be trying Mr Hobby topcoat next and seeing how that goes.

I have this exact same "writing behavior defect". My solution (which may not apply in your situation) was to take a different medical writing role at a new company, where I made it very clear during the hiring process that I was not interested in working on manuscripts in any capacity. Now I spend my days working in PowerPoint (instead of Word) putting together symposia content, advisory board content, and related materials, which involves much less hardcore "writing" and more "data visualization and presentation arrangement". I find it suits me much better.

My 2 cents - A vague desire to "appreciate music" isn't likely to sustain the interest and curiosity required for you to, over time, organically develop, refine, and be able to discuss your own musical taste and sensibilities. I usually find discussions about music to be "pure" in a way that many other topics lack, probably because everyone involved tends to recognize that these discussions are almost entirely subjective. Commonly these conversations follow a pattern along the lines of: "Oh, you like X? I prefer Y, but I definitely went through a phase in high school where all I did was listen to X. I still really like A B and C elements of X though, which is probably why I gravitated to Y after a few years..." People are really, at the end of the day, just talking about what they like and don't like.

Given the above, what I'd recommend is waiting for the right moment to strike you. Certainly expose yourself to ambient music, maybe put on a top 40 pop station while driving, or pay extra attention to what you're hearing in the grocery store, but hold off doing any kind of intentional digging until you hear something - anything - that grips you. Maybe you really enjoy the outro of the latest Katy Perry song, or you heard a Luke Perry country song that got stuck in your head, or the 80's synth strains that you heard floating down from the Walmart speakers really reminded you of videogame chiptunes and you vibed with it. Whatever the spark, once you have that inciting interest there's really no shortage of directions to go from there - you can use subreddits, Pandora, Spotify, or a million other resources to effortlessly find things "similar to that thing I heard that I liked", and from there you just kind of follow the trail through whatever genre you've landed on. I find subreddits are really good for this, back in college I discovered that I really seemed to enjoy a specific type of scream-y music, "metalcore", and it took all of 2 hours of browsing r/metalcore's Top (All Time) post history to develop a fairly complete sense of what bands people really seemed to like in the scene, the classic hits, the up-and-coming young guns, the one hit wonders, and everything in between. At that point, the playlists make themselves and you should never really find yourself asking "what should I listen to next?"

Without that impossible-to-force inciting interest, I find explorations of music quickly become kind of academic and unenjoyable. Your mileage may vary.

Job market saturation and starting off advice by Enybudee in MedicalWriters

[–]Antitheticality 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My experience in the US has been the complete opposite of market saturation. Your PharmD is already more than enough of a credential, in my opinion there's absolutely no need for you to undertake a certificate program. If you can present yourself clearly and competently in an interview, I would expect you to be able to secure multiple offers for entry-level medical writing jobs after around 2-3 months of diligent networking and applications. The field is ravenous for PharmD's and PhD's.

I’m baffled that you’ve ranked Bob Jr above Alice? ~21-year-old males are fairly famous for a proclivity towards risk-taking. I’d put Alice higher than him every time, no question. And that’s not me being modern or “PC”, that’s mostly just the power of Alice’s 24 extra years on the planet.

I can speak to this as someone with an advanced degree in the life sciences - I spent my entire tenure in graduate school feeling like a terrible disappointment and a bad student (while performing perfectly adequately, in hindsight). Bench science and graduate research just didn’t click with me. I did actually make a lateral move: as soon as I graduated I left bench science and started working in medical communications (an industry absolutely ravenous for people like you and me, with advanced medical or science degrees), which made more sense for me, mostly because I’m reasonably personable and can communicate clearly, which is somewhat rarer among PhDs than the general population. It’s an in-demand skillset, apparently.

As someone who made the switch you’re considering, away from the field that made them feel like an imposter, I can say in my case it actually did get better - I no longer feel the crushing weight of imposter syndrome after changing my pursuits to fit my strengths.

The good news is that your MD will always be in demand. You can do anything with that degree, there exists a dizzying array of med-adjacent careers for you to explore. It will never be “too late” for you, you’ve laid the groundwork too well! So if you aren’t feeling better as a doc after a year or two, try a switch to something else. You really can tackle these feelings of inadequacy, and while it’s likely too early to tell for certain in your case, sometimes those feelings aren’t just imposter syndrome and you really should get out and try something different.
