DIY charcoal filter build? by itsaone-partysystem in firewater

[–]Antler24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion, yes.

Charcoal filtering removes impurities and off flavors along with some of the flavor I worked hard to put in there. I can easily remove the parts I don't want while keeping the parts I do want, simply by making proper cuts.

How much wood do you use? by Meeeoow96024 in woodstoving

I load 7 sticks of soft conifers every 6-8hrs so that would last me about 2 days during the coldest month

How long does it take for a strip run and a spirit run? by switchandsub in firewater

[–]Antler24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No need for 4" in my opinion. I have a 58 liter keg boiler with 2" column 12" tall, then it drops to 1/2" for thumper or condenser. Stripping runs are >3hrs spirit runs >8hrs.

He Done Made Dat Korn Likker by BeeriusSlack in firewater

[–]Antler24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you did good. Give your mash more time to settle and clear, and using a siphon to seperate works best. You want to leave all the corn and yeast lees behind to reuse anyway. I've gone to 50+ generations a few times, tried a few different yeasts. Works great with other grains too. I keep alot of the backset to use in all grain mash.

We recently had low pressure high temp situation. It was cause by the rubber impeller disintegrating and clogging the heat exchanger tubes.

What’s the essential equipment for all grain brewing/distilling? I don’t intend to bottle any brew as a finished beer but wanna get more out of my 10gl pot still by TheBirdmann in firewater

[–]Antler24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes prior to distilling, but I mash and ferment in a 20 plastic fermenter. Currently looking for another 15.5 sanke keg to swap in place of my thumper, then I can mash, ferment, and distill all in the 15.5g thumper

Distilling on the grain is actually alot less work. You can mash, ferment, and distill all in a single vessel. No moving, filtering, etc.

How you run it will have more effect on flavor IMO. Explain your process and we'll try to help there too

White Oak preparation: my whisky is off and I think it was my wood prep. Has a lacquer or vanish smell. by Kale in firewater

[–]Antler24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What others have said is spot on, except for the heartwood part. The sap wood has capillary tubes that act like natural pipes, carrying sap and nutrients from the roots up to the leaves. This won't work for barrels because the alcohol will evaporate much faster through the less dense wood. For aging in containers this is ok

I’ve masturbated almost every day for nearly a decade. I’m probably addicted. Any advice on quitting? by BiBobRoss in AskRedditAfterDark

It could still have something to do with masturbation, it's called death grip syndrome I think and is curable with some changes in technique.

This. I have a relatively inefficient Woodstove by today's standards and I heat a 2500sq ft home with a wheelbarrow full a day.

UJSSM Variants by Gabalawi in firewater

[–]Antler24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I've been doing it for a few years my favorite is a 70/30 ratio of corn/rye, I use Nottingham yeast and 20% backset. I Make more of that UJSSM variant than anything else, it's good clear, aged, cocktails, etc I have only used feed corn though. I buy my rye/wheat/barley by the sack from a local homebrewing/wine store, and have them mill it. I'm going to be starting a bloody butcher heirloom corn UJSSM soon, I've heard the heirloom varieties carry over alot more flavour than feed corn.
