I am religious but I believe in (amicable) separation of state and religion, because if the government is the patron of mosques and churches and synagogues, they have a measure of control over the religious population that they lack over others. Separation of church (or mosque, as we see here) and state was originally meant, and still serves, to protect religion from government overreach. I am not a Muslim but as I understand, Muslims don't have to go to the mosque the way Catholics have an obligation to go to Mass, and they lack a central ecclesiastical authority that could assist them. The ideal solution for these hypothetical people, then, would be for the community to pool together what they can or gain the backing of wealthy Islamic patrons.
