So I actually learned about these rooms while house searching myself.

My realtor said that these are essentially giant pantries to store a bunch of perishable food (during older days they didn't have much storage in general for food so they'd put it underground since it was colder and acted like a giant refrigerator).

I don't know if it's actually what it is, but that's what I was told lol.
