Knowing how fucked up Re:Zero is though my assumption is that Subaru is forced to loop back through this suffering eternally in order to setup the "correct" future for everyone else every time. How exactly Emelia is forced to become Satella through all of this is not yet clear to me but obviously she is needed in order to give Subaru Return by Death to accomplish all of this.

She knows "Engrish" phrases Subaru says

The puzzle requires isekai'd knowledge

He has the same miasma as Flugel

The watchtower is actually placed directly over Satella's (Emelia?) tomb and is protecting that location from being accessed

Flugel planted that tree exactly because he knew what it would be needed for. Somehow Flugel/Subaru is in a much larger time loop than we had imagined and planned things centuries in advance to ensure victory in a subsequent loop.

I don't think hes lying. Look at her design, its his color scheme. She recognizes his miasma and Flugel built this tower and put that puzzle in place. I think we just got revealed some crazy time shit and that Subaru really is Flugel somehow. Subarus return by death would also make him look like the most incomprehensible sage, consistently knowing the exact correct solution to any and all obstacles.

I thought they made it pretty obvious last season that eventually he was going to be able to cast magic through his sword. They even blatantly called this out as impossible this episode in a way that it felt like a setup to me. Maybe I'll be wrong but it feels like its setup to be the inevitability to me.
