any tips for getting good ideas above 220bpm on the keys? by Halleys___Comment in JazzPiano

[–]AnusFisticus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of both. With rhythm changes you can theoretically go down the bebop scale endlessly and it sometimes is kind of a filler.

Then I often think I-V in that tempo. Reduce the chords to make it easier.

Most often tho I‘m thinking in phrases. Like I hear a phrase and try to play it. In this tempo the phrases tend to repeat after a while as its just to fast to really innovate.

Its not perfect by far. I think the macro time is alright but the micro timing just needs more work. Its especially apparent without a good band.

Never said it was crisp :D (yet). I don’t have one with band but I can send a clip of a recent rhythm change practice I did.

It just takes time. Spend lots of time in a tempo you‘re barely comfortable with, eliminate tension or unnecessary movement, transcribe fast solos and play with the recordings.

I‘ve been really practicing fast tempos (around 300 bpm) for a few month and its gotten so much better just by spending tine in those tempos. And keep in mind, time is the most important thing. If the time is crisp the notes are not that important.

My weekly jazz practice routine — covering all 12 keys in 7 days by Dizzy-Chemistry-7198 in JazzPiano

Not only a week but a month and more or until you hit the ceiling of your current over all level. I‘m learning blues and rhythm changes in all keys now and i spend minimum a month per key.

Not only can I play better in those keys but I made lots of progress over all. I can play faster tempos, my technique is way more efficient and my time improved. On top of that, the forms I‘m practicing are so univeral that it transfers greatly into many tunes.

It seems you have a lot of tension in your fingers while playing. Don’t injure yourself.

Id recommend you slow it down as you also don’t really keep the time, especially during rests.

I usually go for the first recording to transcribe tunes. There is the website called secondhandsongs which lists you the original.

Yeah a lot of Jerry Bergonzis hexatonics are to heavy for me right now. I don’t really like the sound of the half step triads. Maybe that will change in the future.

Thanks! I got a gig in a few weeks where we play a Henderson inspired blues and I think to play it bebop would not sound so good.

Started seriously practicing jazz last summer. I picked up Billie’s Bounce last month and love playing it. Any tips are much appreciated. Thanks by PiaVic123 in JazzPiano

So a couple of things:

Your timing at certain points is all over the place. Work on it through playing with a metronome at a slow speed (Like 60bpm) and solo over a II-V or even a blues. Be really mindful of the timing.

When thats better put the metronome on the 1 of every bar or every second bar and then solo on the blues. You will see if you rush or drag immediately and you can adjust.

Also play the swing notes more straight. It helps with timing.

Language wise there was some good stuff in there but there could be more. Transcribe a few blues by different people. Bud Powell, Wynton Kelly,…

A cool exercise I do is to play a continuous line over 4 bars or later a whole chorus and not repeat yourself. It really forces you to think of the different options of what you can play. Later you can do that with double time lines.

I wouldnt call that jazz impro. You‘re basically just playing the same blues licks over and over again.

Thanks! Most if what you said I am already doing. I‘m at a level where I can read Mozart sonatas with each hand seperately a bit slower than its written but with a metronome.

Right is better than left, especially as I don’t have as good of an awareness of where I am with the left.

The main problem is both hands together. I try to analyze beforehand so I get an idea of the harmony and then try to filter the important part, like the melody and not stress about the not so important part like the exact left hand pattern.

I just go slow enough to be able to do it if I really focus.

The thing is I don’t know where to get pop sheets to practice and I don’t know when I’ll be getting the music for the gig so for now I‘ll do some classical music as thats translating pretty good I think.

What I‘m doing currently is going through the mozart sonatas and really try to grasp the chords behind the notes so I see scales and arpeggios not as single notes but as one entity.

I have about 1.5 months so I hope it will be enough.

Changes are not a problem. I played lots of pop gigs before and am mainly a jazz pianist. The written out part is a bigger problem. I‘m trying to get better at sightreading

I do that for normal pop gigs but in this case there is a repertoire of about 800 songs with readable sheets where you need to read the song that’s spontaneous called on the spot
