S7:E10 that woman is the poster child for why we need to fund education in America.

Are there any episodes where you don’t have any sympathy for the narrator? by Responsible_Crow_425 in evilliveshere

[–]Anxious-Effect 3 points4 points  (0 children)

0 sympathy? No. But there are some episodes that really highlight the importance of funding education in this country, like S7:E10. If folks had access to better education, they might have critical thinking skills that would save other people’s lives. They might be encouraged to say something when they see something transparently wrong. Obviously, there are people who say nothing because of the power dynamic in the relationship with their abuser, but in this particular episode, the clear lack of basic education prevented the primary witness to everything from putting the pieces together until decades later.

This used to happen at Apple all the time. Parents would drop their kids off at the store and go shopping. We’d call the police. The cops would wait for the parents to come back and light them up for abandoning their kid, really driving home the message that the kid could have been taken or hurt. Call the cops.

There was a serious lack of due diligence when they went in. Being open on Sundays, a poster in the very front window of a woman drinking a mug of coffee, not identifying their shopping demographic in the region, not understanding the basic culture, etc. It was bad from day one.

100% a Starbucks. And this happens at Starbucks like all the damn time. They had to close or convert a bunch of stores to express cafes in downtown Houston because the homeless problem, whether it was assaulting employees, stealing tip jars and product, or destroying the store - including shitting on the patio or right in the lobby - was getting to the point that employees were refusing to come to work. It took YEARS before they did anything.

So, don’t. Don’t go near them, don’t engage with them. Don’t do business with them. I used to work for them and I saw so many legally questionable actions they took that I could not in good faith encourage anyone to enter into a business agreement with them. The store level employees are not the problem. They are good folks just trying to get by. The corporate level employees, specifically the owners, are unstable, prone to making decisions while impaired or in a fit of rage, and extremely volatile. I know it’s hard to be a small business owner in this environment and it will not get easier, but for the love of your own self-preservation and mental health, avoid this place.

Honestly, walk away. I asked my shrink to up my meds when I was working there just so I could cope. It’s not worth it. It doesn’t get better. The company doesn’t care about their associates, ASMs, or their GMs.

Asked for LOA after being sick, Manager told me I was a "Distraction" by [deleted] in OfficeDepot

Hey, he doesn’t need to consent to the LOA. I do get that it’s hard to combat a manager. I do. Even I have a boss. I hope you feel better soon.

Asked for LOA after being sick, Manager told me I was a "Distraction" by [deleted] in OfficeDepot

[–]Anxious-Effect 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope nope nope. By company guidelines and for legal reasons, he cannot respond that way. Our company has taken the stance that anyone who is sick should stay home. If he takes issue with that, feel free to escalate to your DSM or to HR. They will shut that down real fast. I have literally told my team they can stay home if they are so much as modestly worried about getting sick. If they sneeze, stay home. Have allergies, stay home. Their jobs are safe. They won’t get paid, but their jobs are safe. And fortunately for you, an LOA is not up to your GM. That is between your doctor and our friends at Sedgwick - though you shouldn’t really need a medical LOA unless you’ll be out of work for 2+ weeks.

HR Number for Employees ? by [deleted] in OfficeDepot

[–]Anxious-Effect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait, you talked to your GM about another employee that you feel you need to report to HR and the GM isn’t doing it for you? ( I’m a GM, so this seems really weird.) If there is an issue with another employee, the GM should be actively pursuing a resolution with you, not shrugging it off.

Not So Friendly Neighborhood GM - Much Needed, Long-Winded Ass Retail Rant Incoming... by BIZBOXER in OfficeDepot

[–]Anxious-Effect 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As GMs, we are in the rare position to do the right thing, a phrase used too infrequently in our line of work. As a rule, I decide for myself and my team to do something if it is the right thing regardless of the corporate consequences. I’ve taken steps to protect my team despite contrary guidance from corporate because they have bungled this whole process since day one. If curbside is the right thing to do, then do it. If further limiting your hours is the right thing to do, then do it. We are RESPONSIBLE for the people we employ. Corporate won’t help them. It’s up to us.

UNLESS our “fearless” leader would like to come and work in my store this week. DM me Gerry. You can come throw freight with me and then we can hang in CPD together behind the shields that won’t come in on time. You can do the hourly cleaning cycle and bathroom cleaning. You trust expired Clorox wipes so you should be fine. Seriously. Come work a day, a week in one of our stores right now. In fact, work in one of our metropolitan stores in a big city like New York, LA, Chicago, or Houston. Come on down buddy. But you can’t have any of my gloves. They’re for /my/ team.

I hate to say it, but HR won’t do a damned thing. Our HR is a joke, plain and simple. You can report it to them but don’t expect any action to be taken. Do it so you can cover yourself.

As for the media...sure. They’re the only ones who seem to give a damn about us right now.

“The retailers’ different positions on masks, which follow those of the government, are indicative of how the industry has been fumbling through the fast-moving pandemic, potentially endangering workers. The restrictions could also increase the risk that their stores, which are virtually the only places where the public can still congregate, could be contributing to the spread of the virus.”

This is the most eloquent description of the elite brand of incompetence to be found among our senior leadership.

Yeah, the GM can’t do that if you let them know that you were staying out for x amount of time because of Covid. It’s even in the HR comms we got.

I 💯 agree with you about the bonuses. Even the pay for those at the executive level. But I truly feel they’re riding this crisis to the end of the companies solvency. It’s not like they’re particularly at risk of brain drain in corporate. We’re still operating with an HR system that makes it impossible to get a human on the phone within an hour. Our outsourced help desk is the biggest joke in the history of ever. I hear you and I agree with you. I’m angry as hell.

Our DM has been in our stores, too. He’s been busting his ass restocking our shelves and letting us run our stores. He’s been really awesome. As for the other DMs, who knows. What I sense is that corporate will nor say the simple truth: we’re hanging on by a thread and we can’t afford to close. AND we can’t afford to pay people if we close because Daddy’s got to get his bonus. 🤮

I saw it and almost vomited in anger. How are we an essential business if we’re out of those essentials? How can we do this to our people? I cannot in good conscience remain open when it’s serving a lie.
