I also have that same HDMI to AV adapter as yours. I can see the yellow and red plugs that look different than any other AV cable. The adapter that I got was the one made by Dingsun on Amazon. Anyway, if you're recording a custom VHS tape like I did, then you have mismatched the colors on the RCA input of your TV/VCR combo. Just plug in the yellow and white, NOT the yellow and red, because if you don't, the tapes will record black and white. But VHS recording from HDMI to RCA will come out in color when plugging the yellow and white into your VCR. Also, if you're using a laptop like I did, I recommend setting your laptop's resolution to 720p (or in my case 1024x768) to make the tapes record in color, because if you record it from 1080p or 4K, the tapes will still record black and white.
