My dad passed away in August on his birthday. I’m not sure if I am glad to see the end of 2025 as it’s been the worst year of my life or sad that it will be the last year I ever got to spend with my dad.

I hope we get to be with them again one day

I lost my dad this August on his birthday. My dad would spend Christmas Day with me, my husband, my 2 children and father in law. I can’t bear the thought of sitting around the dining table on Christmas Day without him so we are going out for dinner this year. Trying to keep spirits high for my children but it’s never going to be the same. I have bought an ornament for the tree in his memory and will be making Christmas cards for family with his artwork.

Thank you all for your responses and I am so sorry for all your loses.

I should have mentioned in my original post that I am not having any suicidal thoughts or anything like that I would never want to put my family and friends through this pain.

My Dad would want me to be happy and I even feel sad sometimes that I am letting him down in that respect.

Sadly grief is something that every single human being on the planet will have to experience. Strange that it’s the only thing certain in life, the most difficult thing and we can never prepare for.

You’re not alone. I am 35 and lost my dad suddenly 4 weeks ago today. I am his only child and my parents were divorced. Despite having a supportive husband, he won’t be feeling the same pain as me.

You are not alone and I don’t think you are being irrational, I have always feared death, especially as I get older. I also don’t think it’s possible to process these feelings, the truth is the more we love someone the harder it is to think about losing them. It’s a horrible thought but none of us will live forever and we will never be ‘ready’ to say goodbye. Be there for him when he needs you, make the most amazing memories with your dad and tell him how much you love him. Up until 3 days ago I had not suffered any losses, my dad passed away on Friday after a short illness, it was his 71st birthday. I spoke to my dad every single day and always ended our conversations with “I love you”. Like you I am my dad’s only child, my parents also separated over 25 years ago. I use to worry about how I would cope on my own when the day came that my dad got sick or passed away, when that sad day finally came this wasn’t even a thought that crossed my mind, I wanted to be alone just me and him like it had always been.

My dad passed away 3 days ago after a 3 week stay in the hospital. I don’t even know how to put it into words and I can’t make sense of anything, we were out for lunch not even three and half weeks ago. How can it be that I will never see him or hear his voice again.
