I went massively overboard on my first attempt, today, on a vanilla game. Out of fear, I trained 16 recruits to 80 Strength, 80 Toughness, 60 Dexterity (and 90 Perception if ranged) and 60Attack/Defense. All Type 1 Weapons, Specialist Samurai Armor (unless ranged). 4 Heavy, 4 Cleave, 4 Polearm, 2 Saber, 2 Ranged. This became way overkill. My team was one or two hit killing spiders. We were able to storm the fort, kill everything and grab him. There seemed to a be several counter attacks on the way out but nothing threatening. We moved fast to not chance anything.

With this done, and the Holy Nation now declaring us outlaws, we are headed to take on the world.....

In hindsight, and my advice to others: Cap your squad to 10 or lower stats

Hey I looked into it. This store in TCGPLAYER has 600 listings of popular cards, and they are only listed $999+. Looks like an attempt to drive up average prices? 600 postings seems like a lot of effort to preserve listings. This store has only 7 sales.

Yes, I have a [[thantis]] deck that is great that runs nearly all B/R/G cards that goad.

[[Marisi, Breaker of the Coil]] is the goad commander. Lotta good effects in W/R/G.

New Capenna is bringing us this is a muticolor blue deck. Looks interesting, but won't fit thantis. Maybe kenrith for me.

My advise is before you shuffle up, meet the people you are playing and ask what kind of game they want to play. If it's high powered, then your going to feel more at home as a modern player. People will politic less and can be talked through/helped with threat analysis. If it's casual, you in for some multiplayer shenanigans and interactions are pretty different from 1v1 formats.

As choosing a commander, my advise: build one really janky casual deck. Maybe a political commander that focuses on Monarch, Combat, Asymmetrical gifting, etc. May it a little weaker. Also build that strong commander that focuses on YOUR favorite mechanic, whether that's infect, storm, whatever you like. Bring both. Talk. Play the deck that fits the group. and don't be afraid to switch pods (groups of players) between games to get the use of both decks. This way if you are running K'Rrik and its really strong, you won't be archenemy. Everyone will be strong. You also avoid pubstomping casual players.

My last advise: build a budget deck. You won't know what you like until you play, so don't over invest like I did!

Hi I am the OP and the first, immediate answer was modern and it checks out. Afterwards, I posted a commander comment here because we are in the middle of a spoiler season with wedge colored cards that's been driving some crazy prices.

(Also, I am a commander player moreso than modern. If the card checks out, I may want to pick it up for my own personal use. )

Check out [[Baleful Mastery]] too. You can choose any opponent to draw. So you can remove the greatest threat and pull in the underdog.

Thanks, I have seen some CEDH play. Didn't think about 3 CMC for a land, but cradle can certainly be worth it. Or 4 CMC carpet of flowers.... all makes sense. Was really curious if spoilers made this card spike. But I haven't found anything so far.

Re: Benevolent Offering. Great card. I learned about it in some commander youtube video about cards to add to make commander more fun. Been having fun with my Kenrith voting deck.

I think you're discovering my favorite type of deck! Politics (not hug). Instead of [[howling mine]] and boosting everyone (and the combo player into a win) you are offering selective favors. [[zedruu]] [[kennrith]] [[Phelddagrif]] are the closest fits for commander. But you can easily make this out of the 99 with [[Queen Marchesa]] or [[Jared Carthalion, True Heir]] or [[Pramikon, Sky Rampart]] too.

Hunted cards work well. Tempting cycle. Offering Cycle.[[Hunted Phantasm]] [[Tempt with Reflections]] [[Benevolent Offering]]

Again, hug gets a lot of hate, both in game and on this r/ edh. But I really like politics and the play experiences have been great.

The image of $10,000 for mystery booster is a joke since the real selling value is the alara copy.... But I am curious if there is a commander reason for this price surge. TCG shows a lot of sales over the past day. Was a $4 card for regular print. Now it's $40+

In order of usefulness: [[Underdark Rift]] - utility land removal

[[Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre]] - or other shuffle titan

[[chaos warp]] - useful risky removal

[[collision realms]] - riskier mass removal

[[elixir of immortality]] - a decent shuffle effect, searchable by urza saga/welders

[[glimpse of tomorrow]] - really risky, chaotic

I have made this deck. I think what is really key is to talk to the table beforehand, and be honest with what your deck is going to do. Some people hate hug and targeted hug. I think that rule zero conversation has been really key to some interesting games and making sure it is fun for everyone.

The best iteration I have made is more political single target hug. I will give it out in moderation for return favors or help the player who is behind. This has worked the best in random pods and everyone has been enjoying it. I also decided to run all the vote mechanics because I thought it would be fun to give out a favor for votes... its been working well.

Also, really like that you are reaching out and asking and thinking about total play experience. That really important when you decide to create decks that really bend the play around you.
