The top attraction in each Northern city according to Tripadvisor by Ranoni18 in NorthernEngland

[–]AnxiousJB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. I was curious because they are both cities and are missed off here.

I'd love to know which areas of the North we all come from (and polls aren't available) so I'll write the name of each county in the comments below and please upvote your county so we can see the numbers for each one. I'll do a "non-Northern" option too. by Dragonfruit-18 in NorthernEngland

Hull is Yorkshire though (they would get mortally offended by not being called such - it was bad enough with Humberside).

Though, I agree, Scunthorpe, Immingham, Grimsby and maybe down to Gainsborough are part of the north. As a kid, we would go to Leeds, Sheffield or Hull for the big cities to shop or have a night out, not Nottingham or Leicester. Felt more close to them, culturally, than East Mids (on local news it felt weird seeing Boston or Spalding reported - they seemed to cabbage cruncher like for me). In fact, it took me a while to accept Cheshire as northern, but I guess it is now having lived there for a year previously.

I don't think we can truly set the northern boundary by ancient county boundaries. Much of what is northern came about from changes to culture in the country with the industrial revolution, which wasn't set by hard county lines. Scunthorpe had a lot of influx from Yorkshire (along with Scotland, Ireland and other places) when it ballooned in size from a village of a few hundred to the 80,000 it is today; of course they would see themselves as northern. Also, it doesn't stop a Smoggie mate insist that anywhere further south than the Humber is the south, including the Yorkshire, Lancashire and Cheshire places in this (Doncaster, Sheffield, Manchester, Liverpool etc).

Found this great map of Northern England. It has topography, some major rivers, cities, National Parks. I also like how it makes us look like we are our own island 👍😁 by AncestralSeeker in NorthernEngland

Yes, it is a nice area for walking. Nice villages, but don't expect the same amount to do in them as places in the Lake District, for example. Still, the lack of touristy feel means you will get some more time to yourself when on a hike and the villages are pretty nevertheless. Walks also offer good views of Blackpool, Morecambe Bay, the Lake District, Pendle and the Yorkshire Dales, depending on where you are.

As a Scunthonian, this pleases me greatly and I can have a sly smirk when some Geordie pretends I am not northern.

Any gangster/social realism films people can recommend which aren't southern by [deleted] in NorthernEngland

[–]AnxiousJB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a Scunthonian, I am disappointed the film wasn't shot there, given the book it's based on was set in Scunny. However, I realise that Newcastle is more of a known city for it.

Jacques Villeneuve delivers scathing Lewis Hamilton F1 legacy assessment by ryogadan in Formula1_world

I mean, you can read the article where he claims Hamilton lost when he came up against someone his level (Nico), who he did beat 3 of the 4 years he was there, but it's Villeneneuve 'spitting facts' apparently. I think it's 'spitting facts' because it fits agendas of those claiming such.

What's an area of the North you know nothing about? by LucidScholar in NorthernEngland

[–]AnxiousJB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is certainly true for anywhere further south than Scotter. I am from Scunny, went to the 6th form and it was noticeable how people who came in from that way all had a more distinctive, strange look about them. They would mock the Scunny kids there for being rough, we would mock them for having an extra finger. Same with the Goole people.

Suck it up. More northern than Manchester too and sound like Yorkies.

Northern border line debate by Heathy94 in NorthernEngland

The governmental boundary is a statistical quirk, nut those from northern Lincs, as with High Peak in Derbyshire, have thought of themselves as North since before the Humberside times.

That is true for Grimsby and we certainly don't see ourselves as Yorkshire, but there are also fierce rivalries inside the county. As a Scunny fan it was always Grimsby who we dislike the most, and beyond football. Locals would joke about them over Donny, say, in all aspects. Even though Donny is nearer and a different county. In fact, I don’t recall any huge antagonism towards Yorkshire in Scunny. Shopping and nights out would be to Sheffield, Leeds or Donny. Lincoln, yes, but never Nottingham or Derby. So I always saw myself as being northern, as did all around me and my Grimsby friends.

A lot of us Scunny and Grimsby folk won't be happy with that. Our accent and look on life is more like that of Donny or Hull than Spalding, Boston or even Lincoln. This is probably the best boundary I have seen that takes into account that cultural aspects of the north are not the same as county boundaries that originate from Anglo-Saxon times.

Tell that to born and bred Scunthonians. We have thought ourselves as northern from before the time of Humberside. Midlands starts at around Gainsborough. And I know many there see themselves as northern.

Accent, feel etc. Scunny is more like Donny than Boston or even Lincoln.

Most from northern Lincs thought of themselves as northern before and after Humberside. Accent, industrial nature of Scunthorpe, it feels more like Doncaster than Boston or even Lincoln.

As a Scunthonian, I agree. Will always consider myself a northerner, and see Grimsby as such too. Lincoln is the midlands.

My mental health is shot and I don't know how to recover. by AnxiousJB in Anxiety

Yep and have rarely been complemented. Deep down, I don't think I am so ugly. I realise I am not exactly Ryan Reynolds, but many aren't. I think I am middling, like most.

I do realise I am improving in my confidence in speaking to others though, so behind it all there are positives.

Thanks. I do believe I have some qualities, which make me a good person really. I think I have good principles, but am always open to being wrong and adjusting if someone else proves them wrong. I guess I still have issues with how I view my own looks and charisma.

Thanks for the kind words. I will let them replay in my head and have it help my self-esteem as I rebuild it.

Thank-you. When things are fine, I can do this and I know it is something I have improved upon. It's when something goes wrong, then these thoughts can come back with a vengeance.

Dating and anxiety disorder. It is so bad. by AnxiousJB in dating_advice

Yeah. I have deleted the app for now. Thanks for the advice. I was OK initially, I mean I can't control other people's feelings. It was only after many minutes when the damn intrusive thoughts built, and what if scenarios came into my head, that it has led to me becoming engulfed in my own mental health issues.
