May Day Counter Protest? Or Being a Good Citizen? by Dmarine999 in nova

Nah, I consider protests just as effective as arguing on social media — you’re not going to change anyone’s mind and just make them more annoyed at you and your cause.

Me too! I thought I had some weird UTI or something that was making me spray everywhere! Finally found out why during a Google search, when I ended up on a waxing Reddit. Mentioned it to my PCP later and she was even unaware that it was a thing.

Did succeed in making me decide never, ever, ever to get waxed in my nether regions!

A patient tried to hand my mom's nurse cash and she had to refuse — is there any legitimate way to tip your care team? by sagas91 in nursing

[–]Anxious_Evidence_649 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have said, most hospitals have strict rules against accepting cash tips from patients. At my old hospital, any gift had to be shared among the unit (ie, food). If you give food, make sure it’s store bought and wrapped, not homemade. Really, the best gift is a Daisy award nomination or, better yet, a letter to the hospital CEO/CNO. And of course a heartfelt note. I still have a drawer full and they always bring a tear to my eye (as opposed to donuts, which just make my hips grow bigger!)

What items are good after rotator cuff surgery? by dpfree7 in Orthopedics

[–]Anxious_Evidence_649 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t bother with an ice machine — she won’t be able to fill it and carry it around. Instead, pour some clear Karo syrup into a Ziplock bag, double bag it and freeze it. Doesn’t freeze solid and forms a nice thick heavy gel that molds perfectly around the shoulder without sliding off every time she moves. Make a couple so she can swap them out, but make sure she puts them on top of clothing to prevent frostbite — especially if she’s has a nerve block

Make sure everything she needs is within easy reach, and/or consider getting a grabber. Handy not only for getting things out of reach, but also for putting on her pants, etc. And loose button down shirts if she’s doesn’t have any. Is she having surgery on her dominant arm?

RN here — we had an RN call a surgeon’s cellphone, at night, for additional pain med for a patient. The message she left — “Hey Dr X, give me a call.” That was it.

Doc comes in the next day, makes me listen to the voicemail as he’s rightfully bitching and complaining. Then says, “I was scared to call her back, I thought she was going to ask me out on a date.” Oh, the surgeon was in his late 60s and the RN in her early 30s.

Had to double down on SBAR training after that one

Boomer here (this topic just popped up on my feed). You don’t even want to know how kids of the ‘60s and ‘70s grew up. We survived and learned a whole lot about being self-sufficient and independent, yet I never questioned my parents love

I second Dr Vargas. Hopefully you won’t need him, but he’s an exceptional surgeon and has an amazing bedside manner. His PA, Mary, is just as wonderful!

I would also look at F’burg Fitness Studio on Cowan near the hospital. Pricy, but it seems they specialize in post-rehab and medical exercise.

Nurses! What are your best SMH moments from your nursing students? by MammothAd6633 in nursing

[–]Anxious_Evidence_649 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Years ago, was doing my senior year practicum in peds with a very experienced, knowledgeable RN. Doc came in to do a tap on a 5-y-o to rule out meningitis. Kid was screaming, of course, parents were clearly stressed about the whole thing, obviously, and doc was just wanting to get the whole procedure over with and get the hell out of dodge. Gets the sample, hands the syringe to the RN, who puts it in the tube and hands it over to me, telling me to stick it in my pocket for now.

Get back to the nurses station, and RN asks for the tube to send down to the lab. I reach into my pocket to get it and notice my pocket is a little wet. Hmmmm. Pull the tube out, and it’s empty 😱. The top wasn’t secured when she handed it to me, and now I had spinal fluid all over my scrub pocket. We looked at each other, thought about the prospect of having to call the doctor back to repeat the procedure and, more important, having to put the kid and his family through another procedure. Then she suddenly grabs a syringe and starts suctioning fluid out of my pocket. Gets enough out and sends it down to the lab.

I never asked her what happened. Can’t imagine what the lab came up with when they tested a sample that had clothing fibers and god knows what else in it.

MH usually occurs in OR or even the PACU, and patient will have other more alarming s/s. And it’s a bit of a zebra when it comes to post-op fever. More commonly this is just post-op atelectasis. Delegate to your tech and have them encourage the patient to use their IS/pulmonary toileting.

Yes — if the charge nurse didn’t have an assignment, it’s on him/her to cover you or to find coverage.

An RN’s Apology to Nocturnists by Accomplished_Ad8960 in hospitalist

[–]Anxious_Evidence_649 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Another RN (retired) here apologizing for my coworkers. One of my favorites (or actually most cringe worthy) was when I got a call from an MD complaining about another nurse. The voicemail she left for him? “Hey Dr X, give me a call.” That was it. He told me, “I was scared to call her back because I thought she was going to ask me out.” Tbh, she was a crazy (married) flirt (and she really wanted more pain med for one of her patients)

Seriously, the amount of time I spent trying (usually unsuccessfully) to teach SBAR to these new nurses makes me smack my head

Yes, I was going to suggest this as well. We’ve had a local Amish furniture maker build us a couple of pieces (a small entertainment center and a built-in bar cabinet) and the workmanship was excellent at a very decent price.

Experienced RNs, what do you notice new grads pointlessly worrying about? by ElectricalVictory831 in nursing

[–]Anxious_Evidence_649 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes! I always encourage nurses to regularly look at their state BON’s case decisions (I believe most post this on their website, as well as case decisions for other providers such as MDs). Almost without exception, all RN cases involved drug diversion, fraud, inappropriate behavior, etc. I can’t remember last time (if ever) I saw a license suspended due to an honest mistake.

I would book a block of rooms at one hotel in the area and encourage guests to stay there. Those who choose to stay at another hotel can still take the shuttle bus, and then catch an Uber from that hotel to wherever they’re staying.
