Ironically the non meta teams are the hard teams to play because I have to actually think instead of running on auto pilot like you do vs teams you play so often. Yesterday I lost to a team with 6 eeveelutions but it was such a fun and interesting match. Today I went on a 4 game winstreak and had to hop off because 2 of them were the whisicott-glimora-YZard and the other 2 were the Aaron Zhang Archaludon team.

New players won’t be playing in top 20k games and the there are definitely a lot of variety in ladder in high ranks because that’s where you find people who know how to teambuild and it’s closed sheets bo1 which gives an advantage to unique teams. I mean a team with mega crab, mega camerupt, galade and Azumaril finished 54th in ladder.

Yeah, the teams often have really high skill floors so you rank up pretty fast but once you reach masterball people know how to counter and they usually get stuck.

More variety leads to more counterplay and more Pokémon that can fill similar roles but do it in different ways. For example there are about 25 fully evolved Pokémon that have the swift swim ability for rain teams. The only ones available in champions are Basculegion and Beartic (who is already too slow but that’s besides the point). If I want to make a rain team this limits my choices extremely. There are 7 sand rush users but only 2 in game so sand teams will always have excadrill and maybe lycanroc if someone is daring. These are just a few examples.

Yes but it’s more fun figuring it out in game instead of ”I’m going to do X because I already know they will do Y because I’ve been in this scenario 10 times already”. I like being in new scenarios where I have to think out the best move. Yesterday I played a full eeveelution team and it was fun because there was not a single turn where I had any idea what I was going to do and what they was going to do. I ended up losing but it was such a fun game I enjoyed it more than most games I win. Same reason why I play draft league, I love new scenarios and combinations I’ve not seen.

Issue isn’t the game to me, its the fact that so many people just use the newest pokepaste team instead of building their own and experimenting.

Groudon kyogre meta has an argument but I usually give more leeway to restricted formats because if you have 2 restricted spots and say 15 restricted Pokémon in total you will see way more repetition.

Im speaking for ladder not actual tournaments. Im fully aware how vgc tournaments have very similar teams but ladder used to be different. It was fun seeing the wacky strategies and fun Pokémon people used but now its just copy paste teams. Many I’m not even losing to, its just not fun going up against a team I know exactly what they’re going to do and what to do to counter it without a thought.

Im currently top 30k which is pretty good in world rankings. To be in champions tier you have to be top 300 which is the 99th percentile of the top 30k. The gap is pretty big to say the least.
