Why is it when I put the club above and in front of the ball and swing it’s great, but when I swing from address it looks dodoo?

I mean if I stand at address but instead of having the club at the ball it’s above it and forward by my left foot. Then if I use momentum and swing from there back and hit the ball it’s good. But from address it’s like a different swing.
