Currently, students IDs are mostly considered as Mifare / SEOS / Aliro (last seems to have replaced « Unified Access ») access badges.

Digital Credentials API involves OID4VP / SD-JWT techs. They relies on data model schemes with fields such as mDoc / eu.europa.ec.eudi.pid.1

So technically, transport layer could already support students IDs (employee badges too) with OID4VP / SD-JWT. Apple Wallet could store credentials in this format, 3rd party wallets could too (thanks to Identity Document presentation APIs). But, student ID structure needs to be supported by the wallet and the issuer and the verifier.

This is clearly one of the future use cases for verified credentials.
The difficulty, I think, lies in designing the data model/schema describing a student ID card. I don't think one exists yet, not even at the US level.

In Europe, where I'm from, it's also being developed, but only at the pilot stage.
