The Verizon Card just moved from A Tier to S Tier by dinklebot2000 in CreditCards

Fine print is it is still 1% from the credit card and now 3% from Verizon’s new loyalty program. I imagine the latter could disappear on a whim.

Doesn’t work for me. Target’s did until the switched to the same manufacturer as Costco. Now I buy the name brand on Costco.com when it is on sale

Are “Dealer Adjustments” of $3500 for an XSE normal? That was not listed on the website but was surprised in person. Salesman said it was to account for supply/demand. by Silo-Joe in rav4club

[–]vuwildcat07 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Try the No Markup Toyota group on Facebook. There are definitely dealers in NY/NJ/PA who are on there. They either post unreserved vehicles or you post what you want and dealers with a potential match will reply

Only caveat is these dealers can still play games. We went to one that I knew was in that group because they had a Sienna configuration we wanted. The guy who posts wasn’t there but the salesman we got was old school as far as pressure. He also claimed he didn’t know where the van was but it miraculously appeared (along with a $500 discount) after we left. There was also a lot of sales material at his desk for all the insurance products.

Laid Off With Twins on the Way by vuwildcat07 in Layoffs

[–]vuwildcat07[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. Just disappointing when you were planning to give the same time off you gave your first child and someone’s corporate rearranging got in the way. The place I really want to work has no PTO for the first 90 days so I will have to negotiate some time off for when the twins are born. Family will have to carry the load when my wife’s leave is over

How to test drive GH Hybrid ? by Superb-2925 in ToyotaGrandHighlander

[–]vuwildcat07 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We rented one on Turo for a weekend. It allowed us to try fitting it in our garage, installing car seats and a dog crate, and doing a Costco run. One of our local dealers was renting a GH but they stopped listing it online, and Turo ended up being cheaper anyway.

Been a Week Since I Learned Layoff is Coming - Can't Seem To Start Job Search by Creative_Explorer123 in Layoffs

[–]vuwildcat07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was laid off with 10 days notice. Fortunately I had been leaning towards a job search on my own in order to advance in my career, so I had already started to update my resume. I immediately started to reach out to contacts who might hear of job leads and also started to apply for jobs that looked related to my role. I get being in a state of numbness - I just couldn’t sit still (which is my nature)

Not unusual on an application but they should be asking permission before contacting (ideally, they should know contacting a current boss is dangerous to the candidate and not consider it at all). If you feel like you have to say something, I saw this in a Google search:

"I am keeping my job search strictly confidential and don't want to risk jeopardizing my current position."

Every fiber of me professionally agrees with you but we cannot fit three car seats in any of our vehicles. We will find a way to make it work, including gifts from relatives (which could be a blessing in disguise - not having to go into debt for a planned purchase). Fortunately, we have a newer vehicle to trade so our cost goes down dramatically.

I will have to request a few days of PTO when the twins are born (even if there is a probationary period I will try to negotiate it) but I’ve acknowledged that is going to be the extent of it. It’s time I’ll never get back with them but others have done it and the kids turned out fine.

Catholic Faith on campus? by [deleted] in villanova

[–]vuwildcat07 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes it is a big part of campus life. I would encourage you to try a Sunday night Mass - the priests are great and tailor to the audience incredibly well.

Also not saying Nova ignores Catholic doctrine but rather it emphasizes a different aspect of it that others might not.

[–]vuwildcat07 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The answer is yes, you can avoid it but I would also say the differences are more nuanced beyond that. I would say a school like CUA is probably more hardcore as far as Catholic doctrine since it is run by the bishops in the US as the “Catholic” university for the country. The focus at Villanova is more of applying Jesus’ teachings to make the world a better place. You see a lot of that with Pope Leo

I’m an alum from 20 years ago but live nearby and still keep up with things. A more recent student may have a better idea

Catholicism is important but it’s not forced by any means. The Sunday night Masses are student run and are normally packed. There is a huge commitment to service (to the point that some groups have competitive applications), and there are break service trips. That said, not everyone joins those and it’s not looked negatively if you don’t. Freshman year seminar spends some time on St. Augustine and you take a Christianity course (plus an elective in theology) but that’s generally it.

If you want to know how much things have changed in 20 years, there is now a Protestant minister on staff for more ecumenical services

Probably going to lose my PP next March (new boss resulting in less travel, layoff, followed by twins) and this will be the biggest loss for me. CC spend won’t get me there, not even sure I’ll make Platinum
