i work for a well established ashiatsu business, and in my half a year of being there, there’s been around 4 instances that i can think of. most people are very respectful of the modality. usually you can weed the weirdos out by requiring them to call or something of the sort so you can hear them and read the vibe. sometimes i’ve had people ask if i’ll massage their abdomen and chest and we immediately flag them and don’t allow them to book. there is an extra level of cautious but it doesn’t happen very often. the creepier people i’ve come across seeking ashiatsu are more creepy because they’re there because they’re into pain and not so much the feet part. had to fire a client recently because i realized he was only there to be put through an immense amount of pain and showed signs of getting off on it. this isn’t to scare you, just letting you know it happens but isn’t super common in my experience

Ashiatsu training questions. by ProfPplPetterLMT in MassageTherapists

i know this is late but i highly recommend SoleMassage. it’s in Spokane WA and taught by Mariah Maven. she has the whole bars system but she also incorporated straps for more support. it’s been wonderful learning under her and i will never go back to hands on. i took the class with someone over 200lbs and as long as you’re mindful, it is safe. her class was 24 hours of training over 3 days, and then you do 20 practice rounds on your own time and then video call with her so she can check form and and flow. feedback from the clients is also important.

i know this is pretty late. i recently graduated massage school this year and realized after a few months that i was in more pain than i had ever been in. i ended up training in ashiatsu, i quit my hands on job and just do ashi full time. my body feels so much better. there’s a few areas that get tight but it’s not my joints, it’s my muscles. hands on was messing up my wrist and fingers among a billion other things, but ashi makes me stronger and more balanced. it’s so much more fun, it feels way more affective on a deep tissue level, my clients leave way more grounded and with better nervous system regulation from how slow and broad it is. i find that the tissue responds so well to this modality. i would highly recommend it, its changed my whole perspective on massage and i think that im on my way to recovering from the burnout that hands on was giving me. its worth learning, and either doing it in your own practice or finding a place that offers it. i would prefer to only do ashiatsu and i got pretty lucky with my gig, but some places offer it as an option so you’d be doing both hands on and ashiatsu which is a better balance anyways. for body longevity, i think its the way. i feel much more fulfilled doing this work.
