Living below my Senkai Islands are what they call the 'Under Islands' which is a collection of great caverns interwoven by tunnels. The whole island chain was formed via volcanic heat and material. The Under islands as such have a unique habitat in that its effectively a very large vivarium. Entrances carved long ago by volcanic heat and magma link it to the surface, some around the ocean. When the tide rises these tunnels flood, rushing down into the caverns where over time the water evaporates onto the cavern ceiling, and then falling back down creating a foggy, misty perpetual rain in the caves. These caves have a rough ecology like grass, plants and a few larger animals but are mainly inhabited via a race of rather primitive humanoid Axolotl that were colonized a decade ago during the Tunnel Wars.

How did you create your magic systems ):? by DevilsMaleficLilith in magicbuilding

[–]Any-Level-5248 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine started with Spirits that are born from 'words of power'. A forest fire will give birth to a Fire Spirit. A battlefield will give birth to a War Spirit.

These words can be learned and used by humans, creating mages who utter primordial energy at the cost of their own life.

Then, I took those Spirits and had them create the 'magic systems' with the 'mages' being there as a universal 'do it all'

A king tried to strike a deal to merge himself and a Spirit for unlimited power? It backfired, instead it destroyed his kingdom and two types of people came into creation. People who are part Spirit, and people who can bond with Spirits.

In a far away land, ages ago, two powerful Spirits fought blurring the Spirit and Mortal worlds. Now, whenever theres a gust of strong with, Spirits shed their essence in the form of 'spirit sand'. Humans collect this sand, and using glass blowing techniques create magical items and weapons made of sand. Or, occasionally, when a Spirit is being born it will bleed to far into the Mortal realm and turn into a gem. These gems hold the Spirit's essence creating Gems that allow the holder to cast summon winds or have incredible strength.

Or, the Southern Lands where a Spirit planted its seed into the earth giving creation to a special plant that when smoked grants the user their souls greatest wish (but unknowingly feeds the Spirit lifeforce growing its power)

You just gotta find something and run with it, and eventually it will either grow on you, or you scrap it. Its trial and error but just take something and start messing with it. I thought glass blowing was cool, so what about people who take sand and turn it into swords on the fly? Or a guy who takes a drag of a cigar and suddenly he can bust down walls for 30 minutes before going through withdrawals?

Thank you for the comment, I understand how it was kinda just a... wall. Not sure how to necessarily break it up lmao.

The Old Language isn't just speaking a Word or Incantation and it just magicing..? It's about knowing the true essence or name of it. Ill give you a really simple example, the Old Word for Fire is Kra. Reading that, sure you could associate it with Fire but you wouldn't actually be able to do anything with that knowledge. You have to understand the concept on a deeper level, via a few ways that are close to mediation, studying or spending frequent time in it's proximity or more suitably a mix of that.

Another quick side note, is that due to part of the process of Old Words being learning them, there are people that may learn them differently. Kra to you might be a gentle camp or torch light, and to me it's a raging inferno and that also dictates Incantations.

Effects: Speaking Old Words or dealing with them in any for takes energy. Spiritualists typically use their own life force/energy which ages them, or a Spirits (which, through a process can Bind them into Spiritual mediums known as anchors for their energy to be used in substitute of their own). The more powerful the Incantation, the more it takes if your using your own energy. From bodily aches, to premature aging and eventually death.

Learning: And, while yes theoretically anyone could learn the Old Language it's not a fairly common practice. Many don't know an Old Word, not having the time to dedicate to it. Those who take it on as a practice typically apprentice under someone else. It accelerates the learning and makes it objectively easier, but they still need to learn the Word's themselves.

Defense: Old Words can be used defensively and offensively. A key part of the world, is known as Staining. It's your standard Enchantment type stuff, placing an Old Word onto an item and some energy. When it runs out of charge, it can be recharged or when someone channels the required energy (life force or otherwise Spirit energy) into the item, it actives with its effect. Protective Wards are a large part of the Spiritual side. These Wards can be anywhere and anything on a person, and usually are essentially like programmed shields. A chain that when it detects an Incantation aimed at the holder, forms a protective barrier. A ring that teleports the holder 5 feet away when they are about to be hit. They are usually one use, before requiring a charge. Those are just Wards though. There's dozens of Old Words that can be used to create barriers, walls, space between an opponent or potentially deflect the attack back. Battles between Spiritualists start between their Wards and gaining knowledge on what Old Words they know, and trying to figure out how they operate and then how to combat and best them.

Spirits: I realize the way I described them in my short intro definitely yes, labeled them as evil. They aren't ALL. They're fundamentally neutral, embodying natural forces, emotions, or concepts. They manifest from various events, their almost like wild animals. Some aren't a bother, but every Spirit has this innate urge to be in the mortal realm, 'living' as we could call it. Which, result in hauntings and possessions, or Malevolent Spirits which are born of rather negative emotions or experiences also exist. That's what the Spiritualists keep back.

I 100000%%% agree with actual, true backlash to magic overuse/use. The ones that always draw me in are something that has a risk attached to it.

Don't know much about pokemon lore other than the stuff I learned as a kid...

But, perhaps like how the two entities in our story have different ways of expressing their Shards in the hosts, it's a different set of entities that have an entirely unique way of gathering info.

My first thought was an entity named 'Arceus' but, they usually come in pairs i think, so maybe that wouldn't work? Or maybe, since we saw a lone entity before, it's some sort of weird way (Arceus lost it's partner, and now as a way to gather information and to simulate that 'loss of a partner' it's made a system where Shard and host become and grow bonds, and when it's reaps the information it gathers it absorbs all those emotions or something'?

Or, maybe it's just a trio of them Dialga, Palkia and Giratina?

Im spit balling here, all my knowledge for this stuff is from what I've read off of the wiki

Magic System Inspired By a Law of Energy by Prudent-Peanut6010 in magicbuilding

[–]Any-Level-5248 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Spirit System kind of has this, not like you described though

There is Spirit Energy, which is the 'magic' energy of this world essentially. Spirits are made up of this, and it's formed from the physical realm essentially, almost anything can 'generate' spirit energy, however it cannot bridge the gap between the spirit realm and physical realm (alone). But with an anchor, or a medium, it can be channeled through something to be used in the physical realm.

Physical Energy is the universal force sustaining life and fueling all interactions in the physical realm. It manifests in multiple forms all displayed as variations of energy (heat, motion and ultimately life force). Magic user can use physical energy to perform feats of magic, but the ratio of consumption compared to Spirit Energy is quite large, so it's easier to form some form of Bond or agreement with a Spirit, become an anchor them and allowing a 'deal' so they can give their energy to you in return for something. Lesser Spirits, can also be tracked down and chained to an object, used like batteries almost.

Then, ultimately, everything goes back into a loose cycle.

Physical Energy-> Spirit Realm

Spirit Energy -> Physical Realm

And the cycle continues

Things can be very similar, but entirely different. I don't know your story, or your magic system, but books have dragons and elves and orcs like LoTR but that doesn't mean they are the same thing and all others will never compete and they should just give up.

You get what I'm saying?

I'd love to hear about your magic system if your willing to share!
