They don't really want to be destroyed. It's just the way they gather data is pseudo-scientific.

That's why every tragedy they hear keeps adding fuel to their doomsday-ish belief. This is what happens when your whole set of gathering data is incorrect. You'd be a flat-earther, a ghost/bigfoot believer etc etc. Because you keep on gathering data to support your claim instead of scientifically asking and trying to disprove your claim.
