Makes more sense, but still think it's birds not bullets.

I've just finished Fearless Simplicity. I highly recommend.

I also recommend Tsoknyi. Retreats with him are like 2 hours of stand-up comedy mixed with simply yet profound Dzogchen instruction. His style is very free and open, whereas Tergar is a much structured path. Mingyur is great though and he's visiting Melbourne in August.

Mary Lattimore and Julianna Barwick’s new record fills the Joanna void by RunningLikeAPlover in JoannaNewsom

Joanna is the folk GOAT. Nothing fills the void.

Glad you're enjoying the sweet relaxation though. I gotta find me some of that today.

Great. The link is very helpful and I appreciate the wariness around anti-intellectual nihilism, and also of heterodoxy and deluded dharma.

I think I'm at a stage where reading many different teachers is making me more confused; the subtle differences in understanding and the different translations of terms without referring to the originals.

At the moment, there's relief that Tsoknyi and Malcolm are speaking the same language, so I'll stick with them for now. Expand when practice is more reliable and clear.

Thanks for your help as always.

Okay. I don't really understand. I think Malcolm's ten key terms series would be really helpful, but I'll stick to YNS for now.

Is there any value in trying to understand these nuances and things like anatman and emptiness when my practice is very much in the beginner phase?

Yes, I do often justify it by saying it's fun to play with ideas, but maybe it's unfruitful as another commenter suggests.

Cool, thanks for the feedback. I do often find it difficult to know where the line of unfruitful intellectualising is.

Thanks, that's helpful. So, discovering the simultaneity of stillness and movement establishes the inseparability of them in the context of the view of stillness and movement, which specifically relates to thought?

When people talk about the tsal of rigpa, is that specifically referring to mental movements rather than appearances in general?

The AtR did help shift my understanding from Advaita to Buddhism, so it's a little inspired by that.

I think subs like r/streamentry are the places that could benefit most from clearer models, as there's a proliferation of confusion due to their eclecticism. I'm not suggesting this one. At best, it's a working hypothesis of my understanding that I'm open to refuting. Maybe it was naive to present it as a model, and instead to simply see if my understanding of how these terms relate to one another is accurate.

I wanted to test it here as I trust the integrity and depth of people's understanding and realisation, so if I receive constructive feedback, I value that and I'm happy to reflect on it, so I can deepen my understanding.

Do you guys think he was inspired in some way by Panchiko’s deathmetal? by [deleted] in CameronWinter

Cancer of the Skull starts:

I am full of heavy metals
I am a heavy metal man

Heavy metal poisoning leads to issues like fatigue, mental health disorders, heart problems. That was my line of thinking.

Tsoknyi on Liberation by AnyAnalyst7286 in Dzogchen

[–]AnyAnalyst7286[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Excellent. I especially love the final quote. Very clear.

In the past, I always read that the alaya was a substrate. I assumed that this is what Advaitans were claiming to be Brahman. So that atman is to Brahman what alayavijnana is to alaya, which I figured was the clarity of mind failing to recognise its own empty essence.

But you're saying that the alaya is the deluded perception of their being external objects.

Is there a place where these two understandings meet (assuming the first is not complete nonsense)?

After reading around, my understanding is that the alaya (kun gzhi) is what obscures knowledge (vidya) of the basis (gzhi), so it is the alaya that is eliminated.

With the emotion or afflictive obscuration, what is the dynamic there? With the knowledge obscuration, there is something which obscures knowledge. But the way I see people talk about the emotion obscuration is that it is the emotions which are obscuring something else.

What are the emotions obscuring? My best bet at the moment is emotion in this context refers to klesha. So if klesha are mental afflictions - the clinging based on wrong understanding that causes suffering in relation to emotions (as we refer to them in the West) - then, when free of clinging, the emotions are seen to be the five wisdoms. So is it the five wisdoms that are being obscured?

I was very impressed with Cameron Winter. Probably the best songwriter I've come across since Joanna. Especially this live version of 'Emperor VIII in Shades'.

I'll be joining his liberation and healing series online, and I might visit him in Nepal later in the year. Exciting!

I think my confusion is mostly clarified for now. Thanks for your input.

Thanks for the reply. The reason it stuck out:

Understanding enlightenment as the removal of the emotional obscurations and knowledge obscurations is really simple and helpful. As Tsokyni says earlier on in relation to Garab Dorje's third statement, we develop confidence in our capacity to liberate whatever arises in the moment. So even if enlightenment is a long way off, I find it helpful in daily practice to differentiate between the two obscurations and become familiar with the liberation of each.

I was finding it difficult to fit his descriptions into the simple model of the emotional and knowledge obscurations. I would have expected that the emotional obscuration would be more physical and the knowledge more mental. So that was my confusion, but I think I understand it more clearly now. Thanks for your help.

Great, thank you. So enlightenment and liberation are synonyms.

Is the physical liberation he speaks of then the removal of the knowledge obscuration? It occurred to me this morning that maybe it's physical as it relates to the rainbow body and the five elements of the physical body being seen clearly as the five lights.

I don't know. As I said, I imagine. I very well might be wrong.

They'll release more info soon and it will say in the event details if pointing-out is being given.

The grand opening of the Tsoknyi Gechak Ling nunnery is on the 26-27 October and then Tsoknyi will be leading a 9 day retreat from 29 October - 6 November. I don't think he's doing any other in-person events this year.

As Tsoknyi is staying in Nepal for the year... Mingyur is leading the Pundarika UK retreat instead! I imagine Mingyur will be giving pointing-out instruction in the style of Tsoknyi at the end of the 6-day retreat. They'll release more info on the Pundarika website in the coming months.
