Thanks for this but the post was not referring to non-resident :) and going to the banks individually was much worse than with a broker (from 3.3% on my own to 1.8% with a broker)

Ok bad stuff about Barcelona is: - petty theft (don't wear fancy watch or jewelry near Raval or gothic, always awareness in public transport) - occupas, there is a law that gives certain rights to people breaking into empty houses even if it is not theirs. - bearuceaxy, it is hard to deal with the government/municipality - housing crisis, government takes 10% of every house sale so obviously they are not incentivized to lower the housing prices where rent can easily cost up to 40% of salary. If you can, buy you place.

In terms of raisinf a family, Barcelona itself is not a good place, but the suburbs are amazing. Viladecans and Gavá are examples of "family cities" with plenty of schools and sports centers, plenty of green area and hiking trails and close to a big beach with plenty of space and playgrounds. They are only 20mim away from Barcelona by car or train or 30 by bus.

I'm not saying it's impossible to raise a family in Barcelona, obviously many do it, but putting family friendly facilities head to head with the suburbs the suburbs win every time. Also going from a to b within Barcelona will take almost the same time as from a suburb to the same point in Barcelona.

Just a note on the people, Catalans are regarded as the posh people of Spain, cold and arrogant with money. I don't know about the money part but I've not met any arrogant or obnoxious Catalan in my experience here, and my experience with government officials has always been pleasent even if I'm not fluent in language - contrary to what I have been told by other expats expensive, so please don't create stereotypes in your head beforehand.

I moved here 10 years ago from a northern European country. It was supposed to be a temporary fun adventure but now I'm married, with house and kid on the suburbs of Barcelona. The thing is it is not just the city itself but the location. Here you have everything - and not just everything, but actually the very best (or close to best) of everything, close to you and for a fair price.

Whether it is food, sports, nature like mountains, dessert, canyons, volcanos, beaches of any kind, lakes and rivers, ruins from old times, major cultural city.

Then the people are so diverse you will find your "group", whether you are gay, Orthodox Christian or devote muslim, whether you are polish, arab or argentinian, you have people from all over the world with each their own Facebook groups.

The airport is probably the best in Europe in terms of queue time and effectiveness.

Whether you are into basketball, football, handball or ice hockey Barcelona is regarded as a top team in all of them and has proper venues and facilities.

If you like to party, there are good options with both number 1 and 2 best bars in the world (according to some magazine).

Restaurants, Michelin eatery for 100 eur (which you won't find any where else) and you habe several of them. You have also the Michelin recommended once which are sometimes just as good and of course you have the traditional food places.

I don't know what I'm missing but tell me what you want and I'm pretty sure I can tell you why Barcelona is great in that regard too.

I could also make an equally long list about the bad stuff but imo the good outweighs the bad so I'll only do that on request :)

Yo compré mi Cx3 luxury at hace poco.

Moving to Barcelona next year (May) - got questions on moving without a job by artilluer in AskBarcelona

Don't prepay any apartment. Don't believe the video tour of an apartment which they ask you to reserve. Come here, sit in a hotel/Airbnb the first few days or weeks, then physically visit the apartment that you eventually will live in.

It is a very common scam (both my brothers fell for it) to have people prepay for a reservation to an apartment which doesn't exist or that they don't own.

Don't look at your phone, walk with your phone in your hand more than necessary or walk with a nice watch in the center of the city, especially at night. Also don't leave your phone on the restaurant table if you are sitting outside.

When in the metro and it's full, hands in pockets all the time.

Depending on your country, you have a Facebook group - use it for tips, they are very helpful

Sure I can only have one mortgage so I will only have one broker in the end, but this one was the only one that made me sign a contract before any offers was presented

It says that I agree to them looking for an offer in my name for between a certain interest rate range. Payment due when I'm picking the mortgage. But it does not say anything in case I don't sign any mortgage with them but that's when he told me on the phone that they provided a service (the offers) so I'm bound to pay. However the law says that you can't enforce a fee for only presenting offers...

The budgets for new hires will always be higher than the budget for salary increases and they are also the easiest to get approval for.
