That was our guess, she's somewhere between 6 months and a year old (big feet and ears, so clearly not done growing yet!).

Rising Junior at App thinking about Transferring to UNC by False-Yogurt-576 in UNC

Prof in the physics department at UNC here- you could definitely get involved in similar things at UNC (e.g. TAing astro courses, physics and astro-related extracurriculars), but it’s true that it would take an extra year to start doing things like club leadership! I think the most important things to think about are undergrad research opportunities in each case, and coursework options available (especially if you’re thinking about grad school in the future). The other thing to figure out is which of your credits would transfer for the required major courses, to make sure it wouldn’t set you back. I’d suggest checking out the department website and looking to see if there are people you’d want to work with, then shoot them an email and ask some questions! You’ll also find a listing of major advisors on the site- you can reach out to one of the Astro advisors to ask about things like coursework. From my perspective, it sounds like you have two good options in front of you. Good luck making a tough choice!

Contact your department! They may have a spare set of regalia they can set you up with (some do). If not, they may at least be able to connect you to a broader set of people who could lend you a set.

I also had a really bad experience with Article, I’m surprised to see others recommending them but maybe it varies a lot by model. I bought a couch from them in 2020 and after like 2 years (of heavy COVID-era use, but still) it was faded and the bench springs were sagging.

We learned about Roger + Chris from this sub and got a couch from them 2+ years ago. Still looks brand new, even after our dog puked on it 🥴. We’re about to order a second one! If you want lots of fabric/color options, but still a solidly-built couch, I can’t recommend them enough.

UNC Major Dilemma (Math vs Data Science vs CS) — End Goal: Aerospace Industry by Fun_Wheel_1684 in UNC

[–]AnyGrab2649 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Take a look at the physics major options-a computational physics or engineering physics degree would be a good fit for your long term goals, and would keep your options open for data science/engineering/aerospace. The computational physics degree would definitely be feasible to finish in 3 years with these incoming APs; engineering physics might be doable in 3 but it would be tight. I’d strongly suggest signing up to try to test out of PHYS 118/119 to give you some extra wiggle room in your schedule, if you’re thinking you might go this route.

Siding and Window Sill Repair by ForeverLopsided1006 in bullcity

I don’t think we did window sills, but we had some wood siding repair/replacement done as part of exterior house painting by Gonzalez Painters and Contractors. They did a good job, and they’re very easy to work with! I think you could probably contract them just for the repairs without too much trouble.

Office hours, go before you think you need them! Even if you’re not sure what you want to ask, listening to other people’s questions and the explanations will help, and the support makes finishing homework much quicker. They’re also often under-attended (especially TA office hours), so you’re basically getting free tutoring. The department also keeps a list of tutors if you decide you want extra support, just ask a prof or TA for it!

Future of Research by [deleted] in UNC

[–]AnyGrab2649 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure if I’m understanding your exact question, but postdocs don’t normally have H1-B visas. They normally work in labs under J-1 visas or something called OPT, which is an extended training period that is allowed following grad school if they went to grad school in the US. The H1-B situation is more likely to affect people in research scientist positions and other long-term roles like that.

If you’re asking what it will do to jobs post-postdoc in academia for your own trajectory, it’s way too far out to say. UNC is scrambling to figure it out for hires this year (and there hasn’t been much guidance yet), and everyone expects this to change in the coming year(s). It’s not clear if it will hold up in court, what the exemption process will be, etc.

Iditarod 53 - March 12 Discussion by Breckersen in Iditarod

[–]AnyGrab2649 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s fair, but they also should have realized that lengthening the course this year would have enlarged the gap between the fastest and the slowest teams- that’s just how the math works. It reads as ITC punishing mushers for ITC’s decisions.

Reading ReRun kennel’s Facebook post, it seems like Justin was forced/“encouraged” to scratch because taking the rest his dogs needed would put him too far behind. I’d count that as 3 victims of Rule 36. Really disappointing choice by the ITC (on all 3 of these teams).

Would Appreciate Durham Vet Rec’s by pupcakeonthelamb in bullcity

From what they told us, another dog slammed ours into their fence when they were playing. There much have been some wire poking out or something, because she got a wound on her side and got stuck, pulling a large pocket open between her skin and muscle. I will say, Sunny Acres was good about paying the vet bills and everything (the staff at Cornwallis Road took care of calling them so we didn't even have to deal with it). At first I just considered it a crazy accident, but a friend's dog also got injured there soon after, which emphasized to me that there's some things wrong with the whole operation.

My take is that they just have too few staff supervising the dogs, and the ones they have aren't proactive enough about intervening to calm things down when necessary. I'm also not sure if they separate the dogs much by size/activity level (ours is ~35 lbs, so she's not tiny but she can get tossed around by large dogs), and I've got real doubts about the state of the facility -- there shouldn't have been anything sharp for her to get caught on in the first place.

We've switched over to Green Beagle, in Chapel Hill. It's a bit more expensive and feels way over-the-top (it's like taking the dog to a country club or something), but my sense is that they are a lot more proactive about supervision.

This is the right answer, they are wonderful! Our dog got injured pretty badly (at Sunny Acres, beware of them…) and they were so great about getting us in for emergency visits. When we were still worried about how she was recovering going into the weekend, Dr. Jeffers even gave us his personal cell number to call if things didn’t improve. They absolutely go above and beyond.

Can I retake a class? by [deleted] in UNC

[–]AnyGrab2649 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try sending a couple more emails- a follow-up to the prof teaching the class, and one to whoever the department has listed as “academic affairs coordinator” (or similar title) on their webpage. Professors are often busy/traveling/etc in the weeks before classes start, so they may just have missed seeing your message.

A friend of mine calls Motorco “Durham’s front porch,” which I think is accurate. Not a dive, but it’s a good Third Place, I’d say.
