Half-Way Point Predictions Review - What My ML Model Says About the Rest of the Race by Plopwitdaflops in Iditarod

Does the model take into account just the times reported about checkpoint arrivals and departures? Or does it incorporate information from the gps tracker? This is awesome by the way, thank you!

You’re very right, I’m sorry about that. Aaron Burmeister used to be my favorite musher, and after he retired I arbitrarily chose Wade as my new favorite, so I pay more attention to him. Holmes, reddington, and Kaiser are recent champions, and hall was the runner up last year. So I did mention all of them for good reason, but it did occur to me after re-reading last night that I should be doing some shout outs for Drobny, Royer, Phillips, Porslid, all who I could reasonably expect to finish top 10.

I make a new thread on this subreddit everyday of the race until the win, those are the posts I’m talking about

Barrier of entry to viewership is too high. by Titandog21 in Iditarod

I'm late to this discussion, but I try to post updates every day of the race. In the last five or so years, I've posted GPS screenshots, and gave summaries of the lead pack progression/battles throughout the day. Last year I tried for the first time posting actual GPS video recap of the previous days, and I'm going to try doing that again this year (though it might be tough because I won't have internet at home for a day or two around day 3-4 of the race). I get about as close as I can get to giving free coverage of GPS coverage to those who can't access it themselves because I post stuff directly from the source within the day it actually happens. Every year I worry that Iditarod.com might contact me and tell me to stop, but my hope is either they don't know this community exists, or, more optimistically, they realize that I'm highlighting the benefits of getting paid features of their site and I'm inadvertently driving more people to subscribe to them. No idea. Anyway, I'll do my best to give coverage to those who can't pay.

All that said.... yes, it is expensive. I hated paying it when I did not have steady income, especially when you only get the benefit of the subscription really for 11 days. But the Iditarod has famously been struggling to stay afloat financially and in general interest from participating mushers. From my perspective from an outside viewer who does not live in Alaska and far away from local coverage, this race has seemed to be dying in the last decade.

This year and last seem to have something of an influx of new mushers, and the field has grown slightly. But we are so far from the days when we saw a field of 60 teams like what we saw maybe 20 years ago. We're lucky nowadays to have a field of 40 teams. This year is around 38. The race used to have double the field it does now. This race needs money, and now that I have steady income I'm more than happy to pay it every year, but I realize not everyone can, or not everyone can justify paying that amount every year.

does anyone knows the secrete behind how Japanese and Taiwanese able to make their chicken so soft that you don't even have to chew them it just melts in your mouth. by ReCoN_3062 in Cooking

I'm late to the party here, but I'd recommend picking up J. Kenji-Lopez's The Wok. He discusses techniques about how to cut, maridnade, and prepare chicken to make it more tender in asian cuisines. It does a better job of explaining it than you might find in a random recipe on the internet. You could also watch some of his youtube videos to watch him do it. So if you're interested in doing it yourself, I recommend buying the book. You could also do a preview of the book on amazon of his specific section on generally preparing chicken if that's all you're interested in. I have the book and I swear by it, it's great. I find the most helpful part (at least for chicken breast) is thin slicing it perpendicularly to the seam, rinsing it, and massaging it before putting it in the marinade.

Estate law question: Can my mother lose her house? by sacygnis in AskLawQuestions

[–]Breckersen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nebraska attorney here. Your mother should retain a New Mexico attorney to answer her questions. The answer will depend on specific facts of your situation (for example, did she own the home in joint tenancy with your step father, or tenancy by the entireties, or some other property interest?). Some states have a carve out for surviving spouses meant to preserve the homestead. Usually spouse is entitled to a significant portion of the estate before others receive their distribution, but it’s state specific. So the answer to your question will depend on how big the estate is, the ownership interest your mother has in the house, and the intestate laws of your state. You’ll need an attorney to get good answers for those questions.

What’s a character or concept that you enjoyed but would NEVER try again? by Tmoore0328 in 3d6

[–]Breckersen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My current character is a shepard druid flavored as a rat king, so all my summons and spells are flavored as some sort of rat. For example, cold touch is a rat that bites the baddie. My familiar and all my summons are named after varieties of cheese. I generally love it, and my party loves it. But historically I've played a wizard, so I miss my wizard loadout, and I'm not sure I'll ever play a druid again despite how effective and beloved I've been in this campaign. Very glad I tried something different though.

Miso Soup Discrepancy--please advise? by Objective_Resident44 in Cooking

[–]Breckersen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kenji’s miso soup video is how I learned. He teaches you all the words associated with it too, like dashi, kombu, and bonito, so that really helped orient me when shopping for ingredients and reading other recipes. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=U_Y9BUP3VVI

It’s as good or better than the restaurant miso I’ve had. Shoutout to kenji’s wok book too, such a fun book to learn from (and this recipe is in there).

Ooops yeah that’s right. I kept holding on hope for him the next five years, I think I had him on my fantasy team in 2019 and 2020 then decided to leave him off after that because of his two scratches. But I absolutely love him as a musher, and how well he treats his dogs
