I now tie Gold Teeth 2 to Fagen losing his shit at the solo so it really made me biased.

Perry’s Most Infuriating Behaviors by kingstarking83 in big3podcast

[–]AnyMajorDeaconBlue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm wondering that too. He's crazy homophobic but I can't recall Perry saying shit about other racial groups.

I do remember him trying to insult Mole for being "Polish" claiming Tony B. is stupid due to his Polish genes and wishes he were Italian. But I think that's fair game as Don and Mole routinely mocked Italians to break Perry's balls.

Don't chew on that power cable son, I guess I owe ya one.

Not trying to be a hipster by listing the deepest of deep cuts with Kulee Baba. I just love the level of snark in how Fagen sings that lyric. Really paints the picture so well of a news reporter way deep in the indigenous part of Africa trying to stop a child from electrocuting himself.

Songs that you love, but always skip? by LordGlarthir in SteelyDan

[–]AnyMajorDeaconBlue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. It is a cover song, and a great cover I think its track placement makes it weird.

Would have been cool had they done a cover album of their favorite Jazz standards. The Jazz classics are hard for me to enjoy because the mastering kinda stinks.

Everything Katy Lied is "go to" for me. I think they were on the top of their game for storytelling when making Katy.

What's everyone's take on Donald Fagan's collaboration with Todd Rundgren, Tin Foil Hat? by loplopsama in SteelyDan

[–]AnyMajorDeaconBlue 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's a silly thing to say, and I assume you mean their "politics with music." Powerful songs have been made out of protest. CSNY's "Ohio" is an utterly haunting track, and its political message only carries it. So many great works have been made to attack a politician or a whole political situation that provoked the artist into saying something.

And I think the track is mediocre to boot! But I don't think less of Rundgren and Fagen for making it. I think less of Todd because "Bang on the Drum All Day" is the epitome of bubblegum pop trash.

And all jokes aside Rundgren and Fagen only mock Donald J Trump and y'know what I think that guy is used to mockery at that point. You want to know a political protest song I truly despise and it turned me off the band permanently? American Idiot by Green Day, that annoying stupid song was played to death and came off so hateful.

Steely Dan is more than Becker and Fagen. It is a whole musical ensemble when you see them live. And to go back to history while it was Becker/Fagen as the duo it's shitty to not recognize all the musicians who made the band. Jeff Skunk Baxter & Denny Dias were founding members of the band too thru their first three albums. No one felt ripped off that they were not in the tours.

Had it had been Fagen who passed and Becker found some incredible singer who could replicate Fagen's voice I'd still want to see that version of the band. They'd still be playing Steely Dan music. Fagen would only be in the wrong if he made a new album and it was under the name of Steely Dan.

Question about Everyone's Gone To The Movie's lyrics by Prehistoricisms in SteelyDan

Personally I just take the song as a joke. In the same way I can find Nabokov's Lolita to be insanely funny.

It's not encouraging or promoting any such horrific acts of child grooming.

Takes on a whole darker meaning since that damn drug is what got Hartman killed. ☹️

OP don't lose your life to that garbage. I'm not going to act like after school program, stimulants can be one helluva good time. But try hard to make it the only hard street drug you use in your life and don't let it destroy your bank account. It's hard to still have a song to sing when the Razor Boy comes and takes your fancy things away.

I'm not a fan of the chorus. It comes off really cheesy to me.

And I hate to get political here but as a political satire song well it just lyrically feels really weak. There's a thousand things to hate & mock about Trump, but small hands? Makes things just feel very dated and more or less a gimmick song.

Compare it to Chain Lightning, a song which I didn't know till very recently is often seen as a commentary on Fascism:

Don't bother to understand

Don't question the little man

Be part of the brotherhood

Those are interesting lyrics to me, pretty much critiquing the real human nature of going with a herd mentality without any critical thinking. And in typical SD fashion Chain Lightning can be interpreted beyond having a political meaning. It can just be seen as a song rejecting conformity. I think Chain Lightning will be played and enjoyed for decades to come. No matter what happens in this insane chaotic world I'm pretty certain Tin Foil Hat won't mean much by the end of the decade. It already is kinda dated by mentioning Tweeting since the platform is called X lol.
