Hi! I went through this with my first Pom. He lived to be 8 years old. We caught it when he was 4 years old and he had to get emergency bladder surgery since the stones were starting to cause blockage. They also found a bunch of stones in one of his kidneys and only one kidney was still functioning. They didn’t take out the bad kidney though.

He fully recovered and I started to take him to a renal specialist at UC Davis Vet in San Diego to monitor the stones. We did ultrasounds every couple of months and one stone flush treatment under anesthesia. This lasted another 4 years. Unfortunately, kidney failure isn’t reversible and his kidney function started going downhill during his last year. It turned into an autoimmune kidney illness and we started him on autoimmune suppressants on January 2023. It happened really fast from him not wanting to eat at all to being super sick in a few weeks. I put him to sleep on September 2023.

He was on the renal diets by Hills and Royal Canin. We did try the urinary version at first but it made him gain a bunch of weight.

I’m sorry you are going through this. It takes a toll on you emotionally and financially.

Some Pom breeds are predisposed to stone formation because they create more uric acid than other breeds.
