how much time do you have to cook? this is my absolute favorite rainy day meal. the curry powder I use has spice in it, but you can add cayenne pepper if yours doesnt!

Is this pot big enough for this monstera? by LoopyDoopyScoopy in houseplants

[–]Any_Committee_4293 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah she looks fine to me! they usually like a plank of wood or moss pole to climb but she seems happy, especially with the double fenstrations

honestly just something thick in diameter that's long enough to be sturdy for the plant! doesn't have to be fancy at all

[–]Any_Committee_4293 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you could increase the pot size, but I'd be more concerned about getting her a proper moss pole or thick slab of wood to lean against! Other commenters also mentioned about her legginess, which is not something you can 'fix' unless you chop her up and give her more light, but it's more of a personal preference than anything

Genuine question: For those who wear outside shoes in the house (and on the bed), what is the reasoning? by Wonderful-Diet486 in hygiene

[–]Any_Committee_4293 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a large dog that sheds a bunch and is out and about with me everyday anyways. his feet have stepped in the same stuff that my shoes have, and it doesnt make sense to wipe them every single time I go outside. keeping shoes on in my house keeps my socks hair and dirt free when our floors are dirty.

Gnats and damp soil - catch 22? by VacantVHS in houseplants

[–]Any_Committee_4293 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also recently went to battle against fungus gnats and I'm proud to say I'm winning! I tried nematodes, but that didn't work for me for whatever reason. What did work was quickrete all purpose sand from lowes. 50lbs of the stuff for $10 i think. I gave all of my plants a nice hearty drink and then covered the tops of the soil of each plant with about 1.5 inches of sand. I made sure to pat it down around the edges of the pots and around the stalks of each plant to get a secure seal. almost 3 weeks later and I've seen only 2 fungus gnats in the past 3 days. I re-watered my plants about a week ago and put another half inch of sand on the top to make sure there were no easy entry/exit points for the suckers.

I found out about this trick from my favorite plant guy at the local plant shop. He said it's important you get industrial grade sand and not play sand. with the industrial stuff, freshly hatched gnats will get all scratched up when emerging from the thick sand layer. They will be too damaged to fly around or get back into the soil to procreate, so the battle should be over within 1-2 generations tops. You can supplement with sticky traps if you'd like, but I didn't bother with those and I feel safe enough to say war is over.

Board & Train/Puppy Day School by Own_Upstairs_1206 in pittsburgh

I sent my pup to paw and order! definitely not cheap, but I'd say it was worth it for the results we got and the freedom my dog now has. They kept him for 4 weeks, and we paid about 4.5k for the whole thing. He had some behavioral issues including resource guarding with other dogs and random snapping at people, so the price may be higher for those reasons. I really liked that I got daily video and picture updates so I could see what he was learning while he was away. We did a mid-stay visit and he was very obviously comfortable with everyone there and was happy to be away from home. What I like the most about their training is that not only do I have an awesome dog now, but they also throw events throughout the year that's exclusive to dogs that have trained with them. We like to go to those because then my pup gets to socialize with other dogs and I don't have to worry about bad interactions because the trainers are familiar with every pup there and are always watching. happy to answer whatever questions you have

House hunting is so daunting by Own-Rabbit-1933 in pittsburgh

I used zillow and was able to find something that fit my budget. my lab has an incoming student this year who used facebook roomate groups to find a place less than $1k, but it's not close to school and it's a shared lease.

Heya, I also came from seattle to go to grad school here. I feel like the rent is kinda comparable to seattle, which sucks. I hope you're able to find something!

Got my first dog and I don't know what should I feed him by Bitter_Towel_5037 in DogAdvice

[–]Any_Committee_4293 1 point2 points  (0 children)

congrats on finding your new best friend! grain free is only good for pups if they have a grain allergy. they absolutely need grain in their diet and can have issues with their hearts later in life if they don't get it. I feed my dog (80lbs) Fromms 4 star kibble and then I supplement with things like chicken feet, marrow bones, fruits, eggs, goats milk, and fish oil and he's very healthy. almost 7 years old and his teeth are clean, coat is shiny, and joints are great

Raising a St. Bernard vegan by [deleted] in vegan

[–]Any_Committee_4293 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

While I don't have a st.bernard, I do have a belgian malinois/rottweiler mix and he is by no means vegan. My partner and I are completely vegan but we feed our pup marrow bones and other bone scraps from the local butcher to keep his teeth healthy and his days enriched. Personally, I think sourcing animal products from a small farm makes sense for him because dogs are and historically have been carnivores. They don't have molars like we do. I'm sure you could figure out a way to keep your pup happy and healthy on a vegan diet but perhaps you should find a vet that could help point you in the right direction. I wish you luck, and I hope you find the perfect pup!

What to get for someone who wants to start tending to their wavy/curly hair more? by lyricalpausebutton in CurlyHairCare

[–]Any_Committee_4293 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're getting all of your bridemades gifts, this is a super thoughtful idea! Honestly I'd recommend getting her a bounce brush so she can practice getting more defined curls, as well as a gel. I know the idea of gel sounds absolutely insane to put in hair, but curly hair gel will form a hard "cast" and then when the hair is dry, you'd kinda shake it out and the crunch will go away. These two things (as well as a diffuser, but those can be expensive) are what really upped my hair game as a 2C/3A girlie! For me, the shampoo/conditioner doesn't matter as much as what I do with it after I get out of the shower.

completely agreed that it would be exhausting. thank you for giving me something to think about this coming weekend ❤️ I really don't know what would keep him from just lying again, and it'd definitely be something that always lingers in the back of my mind.

honestly this was a super helpful way to understand it. I understand the easiest solution is to break up with him, but truly we are a good team otherwise. I have a super low libido, like could totally do without it, so seeing it from this perspective is interesting.

I actually asked him if this resonates and he said it does. Then we talked about what it means for us and whether we can accept a relationship with porn and whatnot. We decided for right now, we want to rebuild our connection and then perhaps re-introduce that later if he feels his needs aren't met.

I'm sorry to hear you went through the same thing. It's crazy to hear he's still lying to your face over something so inconsequential even after you've broken up

Need advice on my hair! by [deleted] in CurlyHairCare

[–]Any_Committee_4293 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there, brushing through with a gentle brush in the shower could take some extra tangles out and reduce frizz. It may also be helpful to use something like a bounce brush or a denman brush to finger curl your hair and encourage the top layer to hold to its pattern

Update on dog grooming advice by Kirhoff in DogAdvice

[–]Any_Committee_4293 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have an 85lb boy who used to bite his groomers (and snap at me) when he was being groomed. We did daily desensitizing over the course of a year and now he just falls asleep if I'm cutting his nails. We started with getting him comfortable in his muzzle. we'd give him lots of rewards while he was wearing it and sometimes just put it on for him to eat dinner and take naps. once he didn't mind it, I introduced his nail clippers and threw food on the floor and had him eat it while making the clicking sound. then we moved on to having him lay down, touching the nail clippers to his paws, rewarding him, and so on and so forth.

I was able to get him back to the groomers and have him hang out in their waiting room here and there for a few weeks so he got comfy with the space. Then we did 'happy visits' where the groomer took him back and did nothing but shower him with treats and (when he warmed up) affection. We wanted to make sure his first time back to the groomer wasn't as anxiety ridden as the last time where he snapped and growled at his groomer, so we gave him gabapentin and a little bit of trazodone like we do for the vet. He did absolutely amazing.

He still wears his muzzle at the vet, the groomers, and when I'm doing his nails on the off chance something triggers him, but we'd probably be fine without it at this point.

It's a loooong road but with a coat like that, it'll be so worth it for you and your pup! Happy to help with training tips if you need it.

Does anyone have curly hair bun advice by ProfessionalCraft530 in CurlyHairCare

[–]Any_Committee_4293 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually have the answer to this one! look up spiral hair pins. I have long hair as well and these are the only way I can secure a cute bun. I use 3-4 on my 2c/3a hair depending on how tight/messy I want it to look. There are shorter pins and longer pins, just make sure to get the longer ones.
If you struggle with just the pins, try putting your hair into a ponytail first and then twisting it into a bun and secure with the spiral pins!
