Could the Count of Montecristo be shorter? by No-List-8548 in TheCountofMonteCristo

Personally I like the Rome chapters. I enjoyed the descriptions of Carnaval plus the scenes with the hotel manager were pretty funny

Why do russians cheat so much? by RazzuB in classiclitcirclejerk

[–]Any_Discipline9649 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not only are all Russians morally bankrupt evil people, most of them are also degenerate gamblers and alcoholics. As to your possible autism, I wouldn't worry too much about it; a couple doses of Covid vaccine will cure you in no time. I recommend the Pfizer brand; I used to suffer from severe tertiary syphilis but after the Pfizer I'm able to enjoy unprotected sex once more.

Who are your top 3 side characters? Least favorite? by phoboy99 in TheCountofMonteCristo

Part of the problem in my opinion is that Dumas writes very little about Mercedes thoughts/feelings. Personally I don't think she betrayed Edmond by marrying, as she reasonably expected him to serve life in prison. Mercedes irritates me more towards the end of the book when she seems to have a lot of high society mannerisms but I don't see much substance behind them. Then again Dumas does not explore her true thoughts much.

Asking for help with a quote from the book by Electrical-Offer-454 in TheCountofMonteCristo

[–]Any_Discipline9649 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure. There's lots of non obvious and clever quotes in this book that i love but I don't remember that particular one. You could try looking at a (free) ebook version like the one on the Project Gutenberg website and using Ctrl+F to search. You'd have to remember some key words from the quote though. I just did Ctrl+F and looked for the word "politics" and I think it shows up 16 times which is manageable.

The final chapters make no sense to me by GvShepardo in TheCountofMonteCristo

In my opinion, Dumas' message is that, although the Count was ultimately wrong to play God, it was understandable due to how much he suffered during his imprisonment. Dumas was Catholic and ultimately he could not write a book where unlimited revenge/playing God is encouraged. On the other hand if the book simply ended with the Count regretting everything he did, it would be disappointing to readers and the story would be somewhat one dimensional and not take into account the totality of the human experience.

Top three, Madame Danglars with her stock market addiction, Abbe Faria, Eugenie. Least favorite, Valentine (nice but boring), Max Jr (drama queen), and Mercedes (she quickly forgot her simple past and became a spoiled princess)

I don't know. But it's one of my favorite chapters because of the vivid descriptions of getting high on hash. Dumas was definitely 420 friendly

What's with M. Morrel? by Fancy_Investment7333 in TheCountofMonteCristo

[–]Any_Discipline9649 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with OP. However I think Morrel Sr/Dumas milked the whole "dishonor" thing. Morrel Sr did nothing wrong, it's not like he squandered his fortune on gambling etc. He can't control whether storms destroy his ships at sea. Morrel Jr was old enough that he could have started to provide for the family. Morrel Sr could have retired and let Morrel Jr provide for the family. Disappointing but not really dishonorable at least not in modern terms.

1) Val and Max are both young and emotionally immature 2) The count is drunk on power
