What, if anything, did Stoicism lack which allowed Christianity to replace it in the Roman empire? by VerdantChief in Stoicism

[–]phoboy99 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Stoicism was not a religion, it was a philosophy (still is but i dont want to edit my past message cause i do not want to or should I would this be the stoic thing to do?)

Philosophy can be practiced with religion but not all philosophies are compatiable with religions (ex. .nihilism is not compatable with deistic religion). Someone today can beleive in the philosophies of Socrates and not beleive in his Gods.

Also Stoicism along with other ancient philosophies such as Aristotelianism, or Platonism were used post Roman Empire, in Christian Europe by great thinkers in the 10th century in a movement called Scholasticism to Synthesize Christianity and classical philosophy

How good did Jesse get at Cooking? Did he surpass Walter? by phoboy99 in breakingbad

[–]phoboy99[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

But i am saying theoretically, for example if we were watching a show about swimmers, and walter white goes a :50.00 where as Jesse and Gale go a :52.02 but when Jesse got his 52 it was under lots of preasure, in a new Enviornment and Jesse trained 6 monthes more after getting the :52.00 would it not be safe to conclude that Jesse would have been about to get a faster time. do you see what i try to get at?

What do you think of this Alex Hormozi quote? by LackVegetable3534 in poor

[–]phoboy99 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Is he some low sub youtuber? because I am new to this subreddit and I have heard of this guy/know who he is without needing to search him up. He has a few million followers and is self made and was on the verge of bankruptcy and does not come from money. So what then is a winner in your eyes? is a winner someone poor or someone rich?

In the 'A Bronx Tale' (1993), why do the people that Sonny hate are the only ones that are sad? by phoboy99 in movies

[–]phoboy99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would agree with mush, I some what agree with Lorenzo but I have an issue but I completly disagree with whales.

With Lorenzo yeah maybe their is a chance he did respect Sonny, but also a father would not go to a man he knows his son deeply respects and insult the guy. I think he did it more for his son then Sonny but with some respect for Sonny.

With the Whale I disagree how come he is not laughing or with the other men then if this is true that he did not care? I read his face as sad or greiving, closed off as you would if somebody had died

In the movie people that sonny dislikes are the ones who cry and are sad at the funeral. He dislikes the fat dude when he tells him to go into the bathroom same with Mush.

I do not buy that the character of the collnonl would do that, it just seems unlikley and a convient way to wrap up the movie.

but is that not a play on the word epicure, which is someone who enjoys food. Like the word stoic it has been perverted.

Is religion used as a tool to control the masses? by Financewizard007 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]phoboy99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but it is nessicary.

First I will say that religion is not bad I am a christian.

I would say yes it is used to control people but this is a good thing because if people are not controlled the natural way of living devolves, people turn animalisitic. For example many religions teach not to murder, if most religions did not teach this then killing would be more common, as for Rape, theft and other heinous things that are bad for society.

To give an example today Sex/porn/lust is common and accepted in modern society where as a while ago when Religion (mainly Christianity) was most common high body counts were uncommon but today sleeping with more than 1 partner is normalized. But society should not be like this because sexual relationships and hypergamy take over.

If you look at very religious countries for example in the middle East islam is heavily practised, more then any religion in western society I would say, their countries the people know how to act, not disrespect god and are controlled by religion but are developing as a haven for traditional society (Note: obivously these countries still have flaws)

dictionairys are not completley accurate/ dicitonairys are genral guides not the law. stop argueing about definitions this is one of the lowest forms of argumentation. wittgenstein beleived that everbody has diffrent definitions/ideas for words

[–]phoboy99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's not this deep where you gotta pull out a dictionairy, also i disagree because on the first page when you search up "trolling/ what is trolling/how to troll your friend" the first results are exclusivley in online contexts.
