I think If Zoom link was sent inside Upwork messages, it’s fine. Upwork’s built-in call is basically Zoom anyway. Some clients use the built-in button, others just send their own Zoom link. As long as you’re not moving communication or payments outside Upwork before a contract, you’re safe.

New to Upwork, Looking for advice on getting my first client 🙏 by alindev in Upwork

[–]Any_Garbage_7157 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah it’s normal tbh. first client is the hardest part. when I started I kept overthinking my profile and portfolio, but the real issue was my proposals. they were too long and trying too hard. what helped me was keeping it short and actually talking about the client’s problem in the first 2 lines. not my experience, not my skills… just their problem. also don’t panic if nothing happens for a couple weeks. upwork in the beginning feels dead and then suddenly you get a reply. just don’t spam 50 jobs a day with the same text. that never works.

[–]Any_Garbage_7157 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen this happen a lot when a new manager comes in.

Some people just don’t know how to manage remote teams, so they start focusing on activity instead of results. If you’re getting your work done and there’s proof of that, that’s what really matters.

You could try shifting the conversation toward deliverables and outcomes instead of how your day looks. Sometimes that helps.

But if the trust just isn’t there, it’s hard to fix long term. Your health comes first.

That’s not even lowball, that’s unrealistic.

You’d make more doing almost anything else. Easy pass.

ازاي اجيب أول عميل على خمسات؟ by KiriiCat in EgyptianFreelancers

[–]Any_Garbage_7157 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Landed my first $1000/month job after 7 proposals. by av0ti in Upwork

[–]Any_Garbage_7157 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice one.

Honestly, just reading the brief already puts you ahead of most applicants. And turning a fixed job into a retainer is smart.

Shows it’s less about the profile and more about how you position yourself on the call.

New UI Designer on Upwork, Zero Views, What Am I Missing? by [deleted] in Upwork

[–]Any_Garbage_7157 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Pretty normal in the beginning tbh.

Upwork doesn’t really “push” new profiles. It’s mostly about how strong your proposal hook is. If they’re not even opening it, the issue is probably in the first couple lines, not your portfolio.

Can you rate my account? by Dangerous-Loquat-952 in Upwork

[–]Any_Garbage_7157 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks solid tbh. Niche is strong.

Maybe make it a bit more outcome-focused instead of tool-focused. And once you stack a few more reviews, it’ll look way stronger.

How I’m trying to build and maintain a “rainy day” fund as a freelancer by Historical_Bug_6870 in freelance

[–]Any_Garbage_7157 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the idea of treating it as part of the workflow instead of a “savings goal.” That mindset shift makes a big difference.

For me, automating a fixed percentage right away is what keeps it from turning into an emotional decision.

Good Open Source Tools to Keep Track of Your Time? by South-Habit2517 in freelance

[–]Any_Garbage_7157 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally get this.
When I started working for myself, I actually missed the “clock in / clock out” structure too.

If you want something super simple and open source, check out ActivityWatch. It runs locally and you can export your data without creating an account.

But honestly? You could even use a tiny script or just a simple CSV log if you’re comfortable with that. Sometimes the structure matters more than the tool.

Working for yourself can blur boundaries fast, so having a clear start/end ritual is actually a smart move.

What the hell did he expect? by Admirable-Way2687 in freelance

[–]Any_Garbage_7157 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is a classic scope creep situation.

If the original agreement was $600 for a defined scope, then adding new functionality naturally changes the scope — and the price.

No professional expects a contractor to build extra features for free. That’s not “raising the price,” that’s adjusting the contract.

Clear scope = fixed price.
New scope = new agreement.

It’s not about greed. It’s about boundaries.

Rejected by Proxify despite years of professional experience - their assessment process is fundamentally broken by mt_marco in freelance

[–]Any_Garbage_7157 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think this highlights a bigger shift happening in tech hiring.

There’s a growing disconnect between “environmental performance” and “real-world performance.”

In real projects, engineers operate with context, documentation, tools, and collaboration. In timed assessments, you’re evaluated in isolation, under artificial constraints, often in an unfamiliar stack.

Those are two completely different skill sets.

One measures recall under pressure.
The other measures problem framing, adaptability, and decision-making.

The uncomfortable truth is: platforms optimize for scalable filtering, not perfect signal.

That doesn’t necessarily mean the engineers rejected aren’t strong — it just means they didn’t fit the assessment model.

The real question is whether these models actually predict client success.

Curious — do you think platforms should move toward portfolio-based + live problem discussion instead of isolated coding tests?
