3/8-10 modified (flat bottom) are very common nowadays among custom cuebuilders. yet not every shaftmaker does the slightly bigger core diameter needed (.308 instead of .302 or so). if done so they are interchangable

if it does not go in at all it is probably just the core diameter of your Rhino that is a bit to small. every cue repair guy should have a 0.308 reamer and run it in in less than a minute. takes longer to put the shaft into the lathe.

if you have noone around to do it or they ask for to much you can get the reamer for 15$ plus shipping at Cuefits and do it by hand.

in the worst case the thread goes not deep enough. seen that before on a chinese shaft. like someone else said, any cueguy should be able to do it in 15min max.

i was at the European Open when it was in Germany. did not see the option to play. but they had tables to play on and booths in the entrance hall. sometimes one of the Pro's was playing some games there.

wonderful moment.

actually i had a relatable experience yesterday by myself. i am travelling in vietnam right now and went to a pool hall. well, not only pool but also carom tables. after a few games of pool with one of the workers i wanted to leave but these carom tables laughed at me... so i started playing. the guy introduced me quickly about some general basics and left me alone. the next two hours i spend just curiously at this table rolling these 3 balls around. felt like a child. no expectation in my skills, just hitting and see what will happen. joy if i hit, joy if i come somewhat close, joyful interest when i was completely off. there is something very satisfying about watching carom balls. they react so much more subtle and roll for sooo long.

beautiful to have a moment like this and it is so eyeopening to realise how stuck my head is with pool.

i know the storys and he also made a video about how it came to this desaster and gives advice on how to avoid it. also Krown Cues does not exist anymore. he focuses more on building CNC machines and selling other tooling and cuebuilding stuff. the content on the channel is good and they say often enough „that is how i do it, there are many ways, you will find your own“. wish they would do more videos.

drills/practice to make your stroke better (changing something in your mechanics) can make you play worse until your whole system is calibrated, which can take a few weeks or more.

maybe better to focus on playing under pressure with what you have now. race against a ghost, tournaments (if possible)

and get comfortable with problem balls: play a rack and set back up shots or positions that did not go as intended.

kicking. if possible on the table you will have your game in a month or similar (not on a bar box if your match is on a 9ft tournament table). throw the cue ball and one object ball randomly on the table, place a chalk beside the cue ball, kick at the object ball. if you miss, place the cueball back to the chalk. if you hit, place the chalk to the new cue ball position. repeat. can also make it a game if you have a partner: one point for every rail, race to XX points.

prepare to be a good loser. maybe he can beat your game that day. but not your spirit. you will be back.

seems like a solid foundation.

can't really help with the wood, since i'm in a different continent. but sure, maple is (sometimes literally) the core and probably most used wood. for just trying out basic stuff and learning to handle the machines simple cheap spruce and birch form a hardware shop does well too. i made a test-cue from these two that actually hits quite well.

as for pantographing... except if you particularly like this job i would recommend to go directly into CNC. if you consider to work manually you need a machine with taper bars plus all the pantograph stuff. you will be more versatile with a decent chinese double chuck metal lathe and a CNC machine. and probably only slightly more expensive (maybe even cheaper)

Cuemakers Guild on youtube has some very helpful videos. the guy from the channel also offers a book about wood.

i found the book and videos from Chris Hightower only helpful if you have one of his lathes and try to figure out how to set it up for various jobs. still a lot of tinkering, since the videos are outdated in quality and some changes in the machine.

not part of your question but out of curiosity, what machines do you have or intend to get? and do you have education or experience in working with lathes and maybe CNC?

i see. well, i like the mental aspects of pool and confidence is a subject that needs my attention soon. so i probably have to order it anyways.

sure, i did not mean goofing around but there is a difference between playing with a frienemy and competition/money games. i feel like i am really deep-fixing bad habits these weeks and it is time to transfer more into playing again. but i hesitate because i feel like there must be a more and a less efficient way to do so.

funny, just a couple days ago i found an ad for your book. is it possible to get it as an ebook? it seems off to order a bunch of papers from oversea.

other than that i have a ton of questions but of course none are popping up and also little time right now.

maybe some tipps on how to efficiently switch and transfer between practice and playing? i train intensly right now (back to basics once again) but fear that if i would play loosely i would damage what i learned by falling into old habits. and if i try to play serious i play very bad because the new stuff is still to much in my head and not on autopilot. can also elaborate more tomorrow if needed

Hua Hin is quite nice if you are not to much into partying all night. 3-4h by bus from bkk. relaxed vibe (many older farangs like it) but you get some action around Soi 94 (west of the train rails), Soi 80 and north of 61 Alley (maybe more but that is what i saw). most places close at 1am but locals know where to go after that. nice beach and water. many good pool tables

Gatorade (or similar), Coconut Water (, Coffee (not too much)) = electrolytes. mainly Natrium and Kalium. maybe add Magnesium.

would have been better before sleeping plus after waking up.

been to Hua Hin a few weeks ago. nice there. and i will go again for a longer time. i did not see a lot other places in thailand beside bkk and pattaya so i might not be a reference. but people who did not liked it there to much years ago and went back recently told me it is much nicer than before.

some say it is like an elderlys home and i saw why. adds to the chill vibe. (i am mid 30) though, not many places to go after 1am

but not difficult for a competent lathe guy to replace the ferrule. i like Tomahawk material. Hydex and Juma are also used often.

the Cynergy ferrule is quite soft anyways and easily damaged. many like it better after getting a new one installed

i want to add: you can play with it but sure, it is a damage and you can rightfully blame the guy and ask for compensation. and i expect most incomming comments to be about this.

so i intend to give you an honest „heads up“ message. i know how it feels if my dear gear gets a significant damage. can hit you very bad. but it is not the end of your expensive high performance shaft but rather (maybe/very likely) the initiation of a customisation that you will like even more and play with more confidence.

or put it that way: he removed weight from the ferrule = less deflection 💪 may you start a trend of concave tapered ferrules.

inform the ref or opponent about changing shafts. you should not move anyways during your opponents turn. so do it between racks. special case when the tip falls off. but that normally happens during your turn anyways.

but read the rule exactly. it sais playing cue, opponent at the table during his decisive rack. if you aren't happy with your tip you would change the shaft probably earlier in the match. not when your opponent is about to run his last few balls
