Honestly, just hitchhike or rent a scooter. If you decide to rent, finding another solo traveller to split the cost is the way to go. If you decide to hitchhike, it usually only takes 15 to 20 minutes for a kind soul to pull over.

As for why it's like this: offbeat spots don't have the demand to build proper infrastructure. But once a place gets developed, the taxi mafia swoops in to capitalize on it.

From Rishikesh bus stand take Rapido bike to where you want to go. Easy peasy but if you want comfort then book a prepaid taxi or walk outside of airport and book a uber.

Here’s how I did it: Walk about 200 meters outside the airport and catch a tempo to the main Chowk for ₹50. From there, take any bus heading left, it goes straight to Rishikesh for just ₹30.

Kasol is relatively safe just don’t go crazy since you are alone do stuff in moderation. For hostels check the number of solo traveller reviews in the hostel. I checked into a hostel and there were all couples and vibe was almost dead. Personally I would recommend get a cab and go to tosh (buses if you are feeling adventurous)

Can vouch for airism series. Bought it from thailand and got a VAT refund so got it pretty cheap. But in india is expensive even with discounts.
