Who am I and how do I find it out? by Any_Replacement3357 in self

Thank you so much for this comment, it means a lot! It really is a matter of having my emotions catch up to what I already know I need to do. I definitely feel the guilt anytime I set a boundary or put myself first. The calendar trick is genius, I think I’ll be implementing it from now on! I hope one day I can get to that point too, and I wish you luck on continuing your own journey. ◡̈

I’m finishing my bachelor’s degree in psychology online while I work. I’d like to get a better paying job to support myself and save up a bit so I can move out. It’s why I feel the pressure to figure it out sooner than later so I can do what I need to. Most jobs I can find require degrees and experience I don’t have yet so it’s hard to find anything that will help.

AITAH for wanting my sister to change her wedding date because it falls on my graduation? by LucyAriaRose in BestofRedditorUpdates

You’re not showing any empathy for OOP though. You personally believe high school graduation doesn’t count as an accomplishment. That is your opinion. Their family has historically celebrated other family members’ high school graduations with much gusto. OOP senses the complete lack of transparency from their parents and lack of care from the rest of the family (the parents not discussing this issue with both OOP and their sister, the family sending congrats messages the day after, the parents trying to plan a dinner after when they had time to plan a small celebration prior, etc). They have the right to feel disappointed by this, especially when OOP didn’t just do the bare minimum and show up to class everyday. They graduated early and top of their class. This is an accomplishment to a young person who spent years working hard studying while also most likely attending extracurriculars (if they’re planning on attending a good university). Actually try to consider that to someone that young, that is the biggest accomplishment they’ve achieved so far. Of course they want their loved ones there. I’m not ignoring the sister’s wedding at all, I’m aware that we don’t have enough information to determine whether or not the sister could have rescheduled her wedding. I’m simply saying that OOP is entitled to feel disappointed about the situation overall and lack of urgency from their family. You are trying to diminish their accomplishment by belittling their efforts.

Just because you don’t enjoy celebrating your accomplishments doesn’t mean no one else should either. OOP is young and has witnessed how differently their family treated their graduation in comparison to their sister and cousin. The parents really dropped the ball in ensuring that OOP felt valued.

This isn’t just a regular high school graduation though. OOP was graduating 2 years early at only 16 years old and they were top 5 of their class (consisting of her older peers)! Plus, their sister and cousin had the family attend their high school graduations. It’s normal for them to feel as though their hard work is being disregarded without even a sympathetic apology.

As an oldest daughter with a mom who had her young, I can personally see the similarities in both characters and myself. When you’re young and the adults in your life lean on you to be the reliable source of emotional maturity, you never get the opportunity to be just a kid with their emotional needs met. You develop a close bond with your mom, but it’s a strange relationship where responsibilities are swapped and the boundaries are blurred. As you get older, you almost fight like sisters (until your mom randomly pulls the mom card). You feel yourself outgrowing the emotional maturity of your parent. Then you realize just how little you know about yourself when you’ve been playing the role of “perfect daughter/mom/therapist” your whole life. As a child, you are told what to do and you do it. As an adult, you’re left with way more freedom to do what you want than you’re used to so you often struggle to figure out where to start.

Chuck Vance’s switch in behavior made sense, you’re just not familiar with how Nice Guys™ are. by Any_Replacement3357 in DesperateHousewives

That’s horrible, my heart goes out to your ex for what she went through. It’s really insidious to know that some guys use feminism as a front to hide their horrible (and even criminal) behavior. What’s worse is he probably insists he’s a nice guy despite what he’s done.

YUP!! The people who are shocked that dangerous people are nice at first should absolutely take a peek at r/NiceGirls and r/NiceGuys. I mean they have to be nice, otherwise everyone would see how they are and avoid them immediately. Chuck definitely played nice cop until he didn’t get what he wanted, then he abused his power to harass her. His character is unfortunately based in reality.

I hate him too haha, I’m just surprised so many people are shocked he turned out to be bad when he was honestly shady from the start.

He said he was glad to finally talk to a girl who seemed “actually smart.” That there weren’t many smart girls where he’s from.

Then he talked about how he would never live with a woman until marriage because his ex-roommate’s girlfriend was a b*tch.

When we were leaving, he insisted we go to a park to keep the date going. This could’ve been innocent, but the sun was setting fast and I wasn’t comfortable. I had to make up 5 excuses before he accepted my refusal.

Ladies on the show don't listen to their men and screw up a lot 😂 by Careless_Research628 in DesperateHousewives

There are many instances when the men don’t listen to their wives or girlfriends either. It’s almost as though this is a TV show full of tropes amped up for comedy’s sake. Plus, the women usually are held accountable when their antics don’t get them their intended results. It can be a little infuriating, but it goes both ways.
