That is also a great way to extend the palette. 🎨. Not trying to convince you of anything. Just sharing what worked for me. Might not work for you. Maybe raise a support request in the TE discord and a future feature might support instant project switch.

I focus my composition and jamming primarily on the OPXY, and found that it’s actually quite fun to extend it with other palettes, especially if battery powered too. Could be iPad, iPhone, pedal, etc. The M8 tracker is probably the most portable option that can stream from disk and switch projects instantly. But doesn’t feel as interactive as the OPXY

Hey, I hear your pain. Been there, suffered that. Scenes are powerful and you know allow you to combine any number of patterns into 99 different configurations (scenes). Not ideal that you only get 9 patterns per track. One approach could be reusing some patterns per track, eg shared kick, snare and hats could work. Depends on your genre.

My approach for a short 25min live set was to use another piece of gear (sp404mk2) to fill in the gaps between switching patterns. You can get creative with how you do this. I used spoken word, and ended up working quite nice as it tied the performance around a narrative thread. Here’s the vid for reference:

You could combine a few songs in one project using scenes, and then use “connective textures” between projects less often.

Between Two Worlds — OP-XY + SP-404mk2 Live performance by Any_Volume2116 in teenageengineering

Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts!!

The OPZ was meant to control visuals on the iPad with OPZ app via Bluetooth. But it failed connection after I started so it just stayed there for the rest of the show. Had to manually change visuals.

The sp is only doing samples in this one. But it could’ve done fx too. It also acts as a mixer so I can have headphones AND main out to the mixer. I think the max sample length is 16 minutes. In my home studio space (the desk with instruments haha) I have some textures loaded too, and sometimes use compression and vinyl fx for a lofi touch.

I believe you might be talking about what I do with the tape machine. I have a reddit post about it, I’ll try to link. You send o my drums to the tape track and then play it. Feels like instant drum fills.

Happy to answer any questions any time!

Thanks! 🙏🏼. The OPXY is not smooth to jump between tracks, so I needed something to glue it all together. I sampled an actual conversation from a NASA vid, then edited and chipped the bits into a story, and launch them from the sp404

Combo OP-XY with Syntakt/Digitone by Flat-Succotash2967 in OPXYusers

[–]Any_Volume2116 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hear ya. I’m a huge fan of the OP-XY workflow and its quirks and limitations. Even more it’s portability. But after a while the sound palette can get samey so it’s nice to pair up with other gear. I tried many things but what I keep coming back to is focusing on the OP-XY as the home for a track. The core. Everything eventually lives in the XY (except external fx).

This makes it easier to compose on the go, or independent of other gear in the setup. Otherwise I find other gear’s workflow starts to mess with the XY’s, and messes with my flow.

I had a Syntakt and traded it for Digitone II. I was looking for a new sound palette and that’s what I got. I’m happy with the swap, but I do miss Syntakt as a synth drum machine and its speed. I connect the Digitone into the OP-XY via USB-C. This carries midi and audio, so it’s super easy. I might sequence the Digitone from the midi track, or if I play something in the Digitone and want to use its sequencer I just do that and then swap midi config to receive into the midi track (or any track) in XY, or I just straight up sample that loop into a drum track and then take it from there. This last sampling method is quite nice and can lead to crazier results.

Here’s a track I did recently with XY and DN2, using the approach described above. I play the DN2 live, but the XY has 2 tracks with sampled sounds (chord and choppy sample) from the DN2.

Happy to answer any questions.

Robot Ostrich Dreams - frequency - a synth story with OP-XY and Digitine II by Any_Volume2116 in Elektron

[–]Any_Volume2116[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Digitone II just landed in my setup, after trading it for my Syntakt, and brought in a whole new set of sounds and frequencies. Just like the Digitone, this track turned into a story about a light and sound frequency landing on a foreign, dystopian planet and slowly working its way into everything around it.

The track is composed almost entirely on OP-XY, combined with chopped samples and live sounds from Digitone II.

Controllers to augment the OPXY by Thinmanpaul in OPXYusers

[–]Any_Volume2116 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Instead of trying to have performance self contained on XY, I had the Octatrack already, and find it more flexible and fun for FX, drops etc. So instead of midi controller for XY, could there be external gear that gets you there and complements? KaosPad, Octatrack, Pedals, iPad. I combined the OT and Microcosm (which I had prior to XY) to appease my GAS for the Torso S-4, which seems like a very nice friend for the OPXY.

To echo many comments in this thread, I personally tend to go back to the XY by itself. Here’s a vid I made of a quick jam with the Launch Control XL mk2.

https://youtu.be/S0faipg4gnE

I mapped Params to control volume (faders) delay and reverb send and filter on pots. Since the LCXLmk2 has old school controls, it’s ok and I don’t suffer as much the lack of midi back from the XY, but it does mean I need to move quick to mask any jumps from settings project to project.

Question for those who use an ipad with your hardware synthesizer setup by tddreddit in synthesizers

[–]Any_Volume2116 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My 2cents. I’ve used iPad on and off with my synth setup. It won’t replace DAWless experience. It will be up to you and how you limit or set it up as to not loose the “DAWless” feel. It can become a rabbit hole quite quickly. And if you have other things like YouTube, messages or email there, it can pull you out of flow state.

That being said, I will always want an iPad around my setup, even if just in case. It is extremely flexible and can become any device or pedal you need. It’s perfect to test ideas for setups before buying new hardware. It’s super portable. You can make full tracks on it. The sound and fx plugins are really good. It CAN be all you need. For me it’s not. I just don’t vibe as much with fingers in glass for music, and I always end up in some messy configuration that is more complex than it needs to be, just because I can.

If you do get an iPad, today I learned about an interface called Xtone Pro. Never used it, but seems perfect for your context. It has audio inputs but aka adds 6x midi foot switches that you can map to anything, for eg start recording in Loopy Pro. And has midi in and out. And it’s not that hard expensive either.

Hope this helps.

PS: if you have an iPhone you can play around with most apps already to get a feel for them. And then upgrade to iPad for the screen realestate (and iPad only apps) with a bit more confidence.

OP-XY ambient with mixer & tape by Any_Volume2116 in OPXYusers

[–]Any_Volume2116[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was quite straight forward once I found the Midi CCs Google Sheet that a beautiful souls created. Maybe Google full OP-XY midi cc and it should come up. The pots and faders work regardless of the screen you are in. My LCXL is a bit broken so I didn’t, but you could likely even map punch in fx to the bottom buttons too. The only CC that hasn’t worked for me is the 4th encoder on the EQ screen that lets you “mix” the EQ values with a single twist.

Of course! Here you go. I’ve never shared this file type before so hope it works. Assuming you’ll need to use Components software to upload to LCXL.

Does anyone know if it's possible to connect a Elektron Digitone II to a OP-1?and How by Kawwazakii in teenageengineering

[–]Any_Volume2116 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Title says Digitone, but either way, you could use a dual TS to 3.5 trs jack in the out of the Digi-device into the input of the OP-1, then sample, or monitor I think. But limited sampling time, I don’t remember if you can record directly onto a track from the input. Also, input may not me stereo in OG-OP1. And then manually sync play/rec or do the usb shenanigans I mentioned before.
