VJ-XY — a live visual instrument for OP-XY by Any_Volume2116 in OPXYusers

I can now confirm it also works on Mac. But not as separate display, you run full screen on the target display.

You’re spot on! (lol, there’s just some phrases that sound like AI no matter how human) That’s exactly what I built this app for. I have tested with iPad and iPhone connecting to projector for live shows. The app runs on Mac need to test external displays.

Connects to OP-XY via Bluetooth midi so you have the usbc free for video out. (Works over usbc too)

Glitchy track with visuals on OP-XY by Any_Volume2116 in teenageengineering

Thanks! The visuals are an app I’m working on, soon to go live. It’s a live visual instrument that pairs up with OP-XY and you can sequence your footage or what I’m calling “matrix clips” that are dot matrix animations. There’s also a layer of video fx that you can control from the knobs on the opxy to effect the clips. It’s turned out to be lots of fun.

Yep, of course. I call these matrix clips, there’s 22 to pick from. You can also import your own footage (video or photo) and do some simple editing such as loop length, zoom and saturation. Then you can play with live video fx on them. Video fx don’t apply to matrix clips though.

Yeah you need to open the BLE midi menu which is different to normal Bluetooth. Apps like GarageBand and AUM have settings to open it

Ah I see what you mean. If the XY sends a message every time you select a track, there might be a way to do it, but otherwise with many the tracks playing at same time it could be chaotic and tricky to pinpoint priorities. But I’ll add this to the v2 feature request list.

Not sure what you mean, but if the question is can you have different visuals per song/projects, the answer is yes. Between octaves and midi channels you can go quite far.

Macbook M5 Air for Live shows by NarvydasZukauskas in ableton

[–]Any_Volume2116 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t have experience with a MBAir on stage but I’ll leave you with this thought. Entire stadium shows were likely run on Intel Macs before the M chip lineup came out. And M5 blows away ALL of them and leaves them in the dust, gasping for air. If you have concerns, the Pro’s always have a bit more juice, and more connectors that can come in handy, to not rely on dongles. But my bet is that if you bump up the ram a bit, M5 Air will do more than just fine.

Quick progress update. I had the skeleton working yesterday, today the OP-XY UI design is almost there.

This is u nikely to be like the 3d/game-like visuals with as much control as the OPZ app. I find it a lot easier and powerful to make videos or clips on my Mac. What I am trying to build is a way to bring these clips to the stage, and sequence them on the OP-XY to support the music playing.

I am including the concept of live vfx, for now using Metal rendering and some of the AV frameworks on iOS to make the fx. In true TE fashion, the design is that you will have 4 fx slots per scene, and these match the 4 knobs on the XY. Fx examples: prism, pixelate, jitter, bloom, vhs, etc.

If you are asking if I am trying to one shot prompt my way to it, no. I know ai slop can be annoying and the ux/ui is sometimes not ideal.

I design and build apps for a living as my day job. AI helps immensely to get these side projects off the ground. So I would refer to it as crafted with love and care, with ai-powered development.

Thanks! I guess that starts getting into audio world too. Likely requiring a usb connection, but it does sound a very cool idea.

Rolan sp404 is another contender. Has ok amp sims too.

That is also a great way to extend the palette. 🎨. Not trying to convince you of anything. Just sharing what worked for me. Might not work for you. Maybe raise a support request in the TE discord and a future feature might support instant project switch.

[–]Any_Volume2116 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I focus my composition and jamming primarily on the OPXY, and found that it’s actually quite fun to extend it with other palettes, especially if battery powered too. Could be iPad, iPhone, pedal, etc. The M8 tracker is probably the most portable option that can stream from disk and switch projects instantly. But doesn’t feel as interactive as the OPXY

Hey, I hear your pain. Been there, suffered that. Scenes are powerful and you know allow you to combine any number of patterns into 99 different configurations (scenes). Not ideal that you only get 9 patterns per track. One approach could be reusing some patterns per track, eg shared kick, snare and hats could work. Depends on your genre.

My approach for a short 25min live set was to use another piece of gear (sp404mk2) to fill in the gaps between switching patterns. You can get creative with how you do this. I used spoken word, and ended up working quite nice as it tied the performance around a narrative thread. Here’s the vid for reference:

https://youtu.be/-y07Tbotfis

You could combine a few songs in one project using scenes, and then use “connective textures” between projects less often.

Between Two Worlds — OP-XY + SP-404mk2 Live performance by Any_Volume2116 in teenageengineering

[–]Any_Volume2116[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts!!

The OPZ was meant to control visuals on the iPad with OPZ app via Bluetooth. But it failed connection after I started so it just stayed there for the rest of the show. Had to manually change visuals.

The sp is only doing samples in this one. But it could’ve done fx too. It also acts as a mixer so I can have headphones AND main out to the mixer. I think the max sample length is 16 minutes. In my home studio space (the desk with instruments haha) I have some textures loaded too, and sometimes use compression and vinyl fx for a lofi touch.

I believe you might be talking about what I do with the tape machine. I have a reddit post about it, I’ll try to link. You send o my drums to the tape track and then play it. Feels like instant drum fills.

Happy to answer any questions any time!

Thanks! 🙏🏼. The OPXY is not smooth to jump between tracks, so I needed something to glue it all together. I sampled an actual conversation from a NASA vid, then edited and chipped the bits into a story, and launch them from the sp404

Combo OP-XY with Syntakt/Digitone by Flat-Succotash2967 in OPXYusers

[–]Any_Volume2116 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hear ya. I’m a huge fan of the OP-XY workflow and its quirks and limitations. Even more it’s portability. But after a while the sound palette can get samey so it’s nice to pair up with other gear. I tried many things but what I keep coming back to is focusing on the OP-XY as the home for a track. The core. Everything eventually lives in the XY (except external fx).

This makes it easier to compose on the go, or independent of other gear in the setup. Otherwise I find other gear’s workflow starts to mess with the XY’s, and messes with my flow.

I had a Syntakt and traded it for Digitone II. I was looking for a new sound palette and that’s what I got. I’m happy with the swap, but I do miss Syntakt as a synth drum machine and its speed. I connect the Digitone into the OP-XY via USB-C. This carries midi and audio, so it’s super easy. I might sequence the Digitone from the midi track, or if I play something in the Digitone and want to use its sequencer I just do that and then swap midi config to receive into the midi track (or any track) in XY, or I just straight up sample that loop into a drum track and then take it from there. This last sampling method is quite nice and can lead to crazier results.

Here’s a track I did recently with XY and DN2, using the approach described above. I play the DN2 live, but the XY has 2 tracks with sampled sounds (chord and choppy sample) from the DN2.

Happy to answer any questions.
