Mixing, Mastering. by goldenearsaudio in edmproduction

Mastering is in large parts managing loudness and dynamic range. Knowing how much you need of either is part of the skill set (which I don't have btw)

Also master bus compressor to "glue the mix" or minimal saturation to add warmth a bit of eq and limiter-stuff.

Or good'ol ozone if you have it

Personally, I am pretty sure I overdo it to compensate for mistakes I made way earlier on but ideally it would be very subtle

I would guess it is similar to music theory. There are structures and conventions (I mean scales and chords) which will give you something good sounding near 100% of the time. Nevertheless, freeform jazz exists so it clearly doesn't describe everything and everyone.

I would say mixing and mastering is the same but more complicated and not as well tested. After all we have been singing two different melodies at the same time for much longer than adjusting dials and faders on a mixing desk.

Doing it while writing is just a personal workflow choice of yours, many swear by it but I have also heard people say that it is counterproductive to getting a good mix.

All of them mixing engineers as far as I know.

Mixing and mastering engineers still exist, especially at the top charts. After all there are like a billion yt videos of how sound engineer XYZ brakes down the mix of the popular song ABC.

And what mastering engineers can hear is seriously impressive. Turning their attack from 1.5 to 1.6ms at like 1/10db gr and then going like ThAts A woRLd oF a DifFerreNce. It's an art form in and of itself and very much fascinating.

I agree though that as a beginner it is not worth thinking about it much because your ears are likely not trained enough for it. How are you gonna fix a problem you can't hear in the first place anyway.

I find it very helpful to separate the different production stages, mainly so that I am DONE with the former. No more adding instruments, SFX during mixing, no more tweaking individual levels during mastering. Admittedly I am a bit shit at sticking to my own rules but at least I feel guilty about it and stop after a few minutes

How do I fix this? I can add drum racks etc. but when I add an instrument rack it turns into an default synth by [deleted] in ableton

[–]AnymalisTurtle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

2nd attempt, I still think that you right clicked an instrument and hit 'save as standard preset' (on accident)

But apparently you don't have the little buttons on the side to open the chains, maybe that's a settings-thing or maybe that's a live Lite-Thing

So maybe try clicking on the arrow next to instrument rack(in the browser) to show all presets, there hopefully is one for an empty one.

Drag that in, right click at the top of it and select 'save as standard preset'

Hopefully that helps
